Kinda like real life. No matter what you do in life, what is meant to happen, will happen. It's called Fate.Craorach wrote...
Fieryell, I can see what you mean, but some of these are not consequences, because there are no options to avoid them.
Whatever you do, an arbritarily decided sibling dies at the end of the first area. This isn't based on any choices you make outside of character creation, its purely the class you are, and sets the tone for much of the rest of the game.
Whatever you do, the other sibling is removed from your party for most of the rest of the game at the end of the first act. While you seem to have some choice as to how they are removed, the end result is the same.
When it comes to the rest of the companions.. whatever you do, Anders does what he does.. even as a mage hating character, there is no way to stop him, expose what he is trying to do. He does what he does, end of story.
Those are not consequences, they are things that are going to happen and you simply have the illusion of being able to stop them.

It seems to me that the negative reaction some are experiencing here means that what the writers tried to do here worked. If you are this upset at the loss of a video game character, you would have to imagine that is only a minute particle of what Hawke would feel if he were real person and lost his sister/brother.
Sure thing. And exactly because of this I think that Hawkes reaction is pretty weak.
Cullen: "We will take her to the Circle"
Hawke: "OVER MY DEAD BODY!" *steps aside and allows the Templars to leave with Bethany*

I've seen this reasoning before, it's utterly asinine.Bathead wrote...

There's is a gap, indeed I'd say that it's a gigantic gulf, of distinction between player emotions that result of feeling as if the game is being arbitrary and stupid and player emotions that result of decent writing and attachment. As if every complaint about a game's writing or presentation can be dismissed as dramatic.
"Man, I hate that this game is railroading me!"
The game is doing what it's supposed to, making you feel like a desperate man with no choice but to fight for survival!
"This boss is cheap and unfair. It has a one-hit kill move you can't avoid and there's no cue!"
The game is doing what it's supposed to, making you feel danger for your very life and frustration at the cruel circumstance you are forced to deal with!
"This character is a total idiot, I don't want them in my group and frankly I want to kill them!"
The game is doing what it's supposed to, forcing you to realize the dire situation you're in and make unlikely allies. Your hatred for the character is obviously the result of incredible writing to make you hate them!
It's absurd.
