Playing on Nightmare my least useful companion is also my favorite companion. Oh, the irony 
As for the best companion I would lean towards Varric simply because he puts out some solid DPS and he gives me free XP for traps and chests

I've just played the game enough times that I know where all the traps are. I find if you're controlling the rogue it's not too bad but if you're playing as Hawke by the time the rogue gets in range of the trap to see it you're just about on top of it so ya, it's kinda useless at that point. I save VERY frequently when I play on PC so I just reload and get my free xp from it
