It really is all about party composition, so I'm just going to say...
Most Useful: Aveline because she is the best possible tank
Most Useless: Merrill because she cannot heal

Have only been playing on Nightmare so far.

Most useful: Aveline if I can actually hold threat on her, Anders, Merrill, probably Bethany but I don't think I've specced her very well (I'm playing a 2h warrior - stuck on the rockwraith at the moment on Nightmare. I'm probably going to have to restart the area and include Anders in the party).

Least useful: Isabela. If I were to micromanage my 2h warrior more by turning off his offensive talents she might have more viability, but as it stands she keeps getting one-shotted by Hawke almost every single battle. I try to switch to her after I suicide charge Hawke in and spam all of his abilities at the start of the fight so then she can come in and hopskip around and finish the survivors, but it's usually more trouble than it's worth. I'd rather have Varric pew pewing at a distance than her (haven't gotten Sebastian yet).

Most useful= Aveline, Varric, Merril.

USeless= Isabella.

Having 80% dodge against normals just does not cut it, she still get stunlock unless you micro-manage her, and if you do micro-manage her, you realize that she just doesn't have enough CCC to be really useful, nor does she has any of the good DW abilities (shadow or assassin).

Compare Varric's tree to isabella and it's a joke.

Isabella (goes splat every other fight and i'm on casual)
Aveline (unless you take control, she is ALWAYS losing aggro or not even attacking at all)

Funny how everyone is saying izzy is useless, she is actually pretty good if you know how to put up her tactics correctly and actually spec her properly, once you hit the 80% defense cap she turns into a combat monster.

Completely Useless: Carver (Go get killed you emogit)
The rest are all good in their respective area, and if done correctly they are all pretty damn awesome except for maybe fenris, but thats because he is also a emogit.

merrill is freakin amazing as a dps if you're not a pro... her survivabilty can easily save a fight. having more life than my tank and about the same armor... i loved her, she's my fav companion except i don't find much use for her when the battle is going smoothly.

as for most useful: Anders (even though he annoys the crap outta me) and varric (for his damage, aggro managemant and just being funny)
least useful: Carver and Issabel

Most Useless: I guess I'm jumping on the bandwagon (factwagon more like it), but Isabela simply doesn't do her job well enough comparatively. No, go ahead and say it. I agree. lol. Her special skills are alot like the duelist tree which are fail because they are trying to make her tank. It's not the rogues job to tank that's why it's fail. X% more defense isn't much when the glass low hp low armor still can't take any hits compared to a warrior who can soak that crap up. One good hit and the rogue is down, period. Better to focus on dps and let the warrior pull the aggro and take the hits and yet she's missing most of the best dps skills like assasinate that are only available to a pc Hawke. Fail.

My Hawke was pretty much a tank DW rogue and it worked out fine on hard. I used her and Fenris up front with Varric and Anders in back. With the duelist tree and a lot of cunning (which boosts defense) a DW rogue can stay in the thick of battle very, very well.

On Normal? No one is useless persay. Though, I will admit I used Fenris the least of all my allies by a wide margin.

On Nightmare? Merril and Fenris are both equally useless. AoE comes with too many faults overall and since she cannot serve as a pinch healer, she lacks in that regard. Also? The dps that a rogue can contribute laughs at anything a two-handed warrior can do in this game.

Then again, if you have Hawke serving the role of pure melee dps as a rogue. That pretty much makes the game a joke outright.

As a 2h warrior on normal (and as a gamer who finds something he likes and sticks the **** to it - why change a good thing?)-

Useful - Anders (mad heal skillz), Aveline (tanks like a dream), Sebastian (AoEs and range).
Edit - Also, the Dog. Simply because (and I don't know why) he seems to generate aggro like a mofo and is a constant (yet low) source of DPS.

Useless - Not that I find any of the characters particularly useless, my least favourite is Merril (her unique tree is real nice on paper, but in action it's so-so). I also don't like using Isabella, simply because with aveline next to me, three's a crowd.

few people are mentioning how useless the siblings are. Only 5 talent trees, no spec, taken away for most of the game. They should have been important as they are family. Instead I got no emotional involvment out of them and cared more about my friends than family.

isabella does massive damage i just think you guys have not figured out how to use or spec her.
twin fangs + 100% crit chance+ 120% to ppl not targeting you talent is a godsend for instantly blowing up medium hp > small hp targets. also on boss fights this is key to burning down a harder large hp bar enemy in seconds. I have found no character to be useless or less useful.

edit: i further make my statement because of known bugs, the characters more often than not dont get their actual bonuses often. in example anders for me has no magic reisstance for no reason. i found this out because i noticed hawke getting slower over time. looking@ other toons using the daosaveeditor to look@ their stats i noticed alot of stuff missing. i think bioware works out all these kinks people will see the true value of most of the characters. theres alot of bugs and for these reasons they pidgeon hole ppl into certain playstyles.

I found Merrill an absolute beast on Nightmare, but I took Anders along and had him specced for pure healing and support. With the entire Primal tree plus her Blood Magic abilities she was deadly and surprisingly sturdy.

I was disappointed that Bethany hadn't gained access to new abilities when I got her back in Act III, so I used the console to make her a Force Mage, which seemed only fair since everyone else has six talent trees. Good times.

Did you have her e unique spec running?  It seems like she would have to be getting killed by single mobs.  Surrounded by 4 mobs she begins to be a bi t of a tank.

I'm not speaking in her favor as "more useful"  than any of the others, I  jsut don't see how she could have relatively low survivability with all that stacked defense.




My opinion:

Most: Anders, Merill.
Least: Depends on what I'm playing. Some specs have duplicate synergy, others do not.




Merill is a monster though.  She likes to die, but that is completely solved by entropic sustained ability.  I use her to cast corrosive-virulent-living-bomb on a mob, then I one-shot the mob and it kills all the lesser adds.

If I  hadn't had that trick versus the templar Varell (or whatever his name was) , then that fight would have been far more difficult.   Her entropy healing  meant she was the only on besides hawk still alive at the end of that fight.

Anders is so useful that it seems that Bio just really really really wanted you to use him.

I agree that Merril is useful plus if she is surrounded her unique abilities can kill the lesser enemies or she could flee using her teleport.

ATM I am playing as a rogue myself and I always have Aveline around to tank. The other 2 spots are a toss up for me. I was using Beth for all of act 1 to heal but.. well you know how that ended. So now that she is gone I am trying to decide if I want Anders hanging around. Isabella is just so much eye candy its "hard" for me not to take her along. I like her sayings and I'm still trying to romance her so, not sure what to do on that one. Merill seems to do crazy amounts of AoE dmg and Varric, well I'm not sure about him either. Seems squishy and his dmg appears to be total ****.

I liked anders for his revive, but then I got the revive grenade and never looked back.
