DPS (damage per second) is more important than Damage, Hawke's spells will deal more damage but Anders will cast them more frequently which is the important factor here. Anders can cast a spell three times while you are waiting for your second cast, it makes over 10 more casts in a longer time which makes him top DPS but you should know that Damage is not everything, Hawke can go Blood mage/force mage and not let a single target move, least of all attack which contributes more to winning a fight than damage. Anders is pure damage, he does not have access to enthropy tree as well even more lacking in cc department

Its worth to notice Anders' cooldown reduction with martyr is % based (20%), meaning if he casts martyr 5 times every single spell in his arsenal will be ready immediately that means double aoe lighting and fire  spells along with several chain lightning in between. Not to mention the permanent Haste buff which only Anders can provide. Anders literally spams spirit bolt if you learn that talent, almost every 5 seconds. Overall I don't know why but combat designers made Anders very useful, the true challenge of DA2, which I have done it, is finishing nightmare without Anders in party while not being a mage yourself. The hardest battle of your life will be the high dragon on act 3. Prepare to hit "load last save" hundreds of times :)

Overall damage adds more to dps than spell cooldowns imo. Maybe it's more of a speedrunning thing, but most battles can be completed in under 1-2 minutes, which means that spells are rarely cast more than once.

When you consider that a min-maxed crit-mage hawke has higher base damage, deals an extra 75% critical damage and ~50% elemental damage compared to Anders, each attack (auto-attacks and spells) is likely to deal more than double the damage. This means that while Anders may be able to cast 3 times for every 2 of Hawke's, Hawke is effectively casting the equivalent to 4 times. I also believe the Martyr animation may be slightly reducing dps (since it interrupts auto-attacks), however the party benefit of perma-haste more than makes up for it really.

Haha I don't even know why I'm debating this, was just checking out the new forum layout and decided to be a pedant.

Anders isn't actually too bad with a rogue/warrior hawke since they hold threat a lot better than mages. I do agree that one of the more.. challenging aspects of the game is keeping Anders alive on nightmare without any constitution. Malvernis probably holds the record for the most reloads though - those bloody archers at the start haha.

Most useful for me: Aveline and Varric.

Least useful: Sebastian is redundant when you've got Varric around. Fenris because I don't like to micromanage in battle just to make sure he doesn't wipe the group, and speccing him to do nothing but auto-attack is pretty dull.

I'd have answered differently when this topic was first created, but I've come around to see the usefulness of all the characters.  It's true that some are more useful than others, though!  For me, it depends on what my Hawke is and what difficulty I'm playing on.

I usually play on Hard, and I can make any party work there, but my 'A' team is Mage!Hawke (Force Mage/Spirit Healer), Fenris or Aveline, Varric & Merrill.  My High Dragon team is Aveline/Varric/Anders, as that's a long, healing-intensive fight.

On Nightmare, it's definitely Rogue!Hawke (dual-wield)/Aveline/Varric/Anders; I struggle with any other team.  Heck, I struggle with that team, but not as much!

Most useful is Aveline, only reason to not include her is for variety or a challenge.

Least useful. Well Sebastian is dominated by Varric so I never really use him. However technically I think I have to go with Bethany, she can't use primal but is set up for elemental which has a friendly fire problem. Calver, a weak copy of Fenris has to be in the running here as well.

As to Isabel, she is fine as long as you play here as your personal character, letting Hawke run on auto. Otherwise yes she does die too much.

As to Mirrill haters, I suspect she is being misunderstood. She does not need to waste points in wisdom so she can make a extremely powerful blood mage. If Hawke is a mage she can also play as a second tank.

Fenris is great against mages, main problem here is friendly fire, the number of times he has killed Isabel...

Useful: Merrill. In second place is Sebastian, who I put ahead of Varric because his Decoy ability can tie up enemies and he can more easily alter his weapon to fit the situation.

Useless: Probably Isabela, with Anders a closer second. Izzy is a bit of a glass cannnon, and Anders becomes irrelevant by Act 3 when potions and bombs can do his job even more efficiently.

Most useful: Aveline. Her durability aids in most encounters.

Least useful: Isabela, except as verbal fodder for Aveline.

Useful: Fenris, Anders (haste bot), Merrill, Varric

Useless: Isabela (dies way too fast), Carver (I love him but Fenris is better), Aveline

Most useful: Aveline, Merrill, and Isabela in that order. All three women make up my party the majority of my playtime. I never put points into con for Isabela because cunning provides a decent defense boost. With Merrill she can tank just as good as Aveline and provide entropy spells.

Least useful: Fenris and Varric. Both of them die so fast.

I usually play on Hard difficulty.

Er, Varric is one of the most useful party members on NIGHTMARE.  Insane DPS and from range.  Get Avaline to tank or someone else to distract the enemy and Bianca will shred them.

You guys should invest more in Isabela's scoundrel abilities. Don't think just in terms of defense (Cunning) or health. She needs to distract and push the threat on others.

It's offense that lacks imo. Not her survivability. Dagger rogues really shine when you play them, I think. Not so much for AI. Same thing with DAO.

Isabela doesn't die easily. Get her special tree upgrades, fog and chameleon breath and she can survive pretty much anything except for spells but mages are kill on sight so it shouldn't really matter. If you let the saarebas cast spells on NM, Isabela dying is the least of your problems. Her problem is that she is literally useless in caster setups. As rogue I think she is the best party member after Anders. As warrior she is okish, Varric is a little better but she can work as well. As mage, she is totally useless, zero synergy. She doesn't have any real combo for brittle, she has to go melee without magic resistance and if you take the active skills she needs micromanagement which you can't afford to do as mage, takes way too much time. I tried making her work as a puller with fog, evasion stun and goad, but it's way too tiresome and not particularly effective.

Imo the most useful character is Anders. He brings the party together. Haste is arguably the most powerful spell in the game and he can give it permanently due to martyr and due to the nature of his special tree and his role, he can compliment the main character no matter the class.

Least useful I'd say Fenris. He does ok damage but that's it. Only mage hawke has any use for him because he has high resistances and you don't have to worry too much about friendly fire killing him.

My main NM parties are

Warrior Hawke

Anders, Merrill, Varric

Rogue Hawke

Anders, Merrill or Varric, Isabela (Merrill is better for powerful enemies, Varric is better for the ganks and mass weak enemies)

Mage Hawke

Anders, Merrill, Varric

Special mention to Aveline against some boss fights that usually replaces Merrill or Isabela

Aveline is an amazing tank + Bodyguard is great.

Isabella is probably the weakest. There is no need for a melee rogue when Varric and Carver/Fenris can dish out damage while being behind the safety of range/armor.

My thoughts

When playing a Tank

Best: Merrill: Excellent DPS, and has access to the hardest hitting spells.  Bad side: on Nightmare she's a teamate killer.

Worst: Isabella: Dies to fast, and must be micromanaged.
