I'm just playing Dragon Age, and I think it is one of the best RPG in years. But I'm a little disappointed, that there are only 4 characters in a party. I've played Baldur's Gate, and Icewind Dale - where you could have 5-6 members in your group - and I liked the system of those games more. I admit, that 6 character is too much, but 5 people would be better than 4. Of course, tha game should be rebalanced, so it would'n become too easy. Do you thik a DLC or mod could fix that?
Do you think that a party with 5 members would be better?

I thought 4 worked out well. Why do you think you need a 5th?

5 would be a lot of fun and you would be able to experiment with some different group setups. Same with 6, though youd probably need to play it on nightmare to have any challenge. The difficulty levels and sheer number of mobs in every encounter seem to hint at the fact that BioWare expected someone to add more characters to the mix, sooner or later.

Four is a good number. Why would you need a fifth? The game would be fairly unbalanced to your party the way it is now. You wouldn't really be experimenting with group types because the group "normal" is four members, not five. Experiment by playing with different party members the way it is.
I know in other games there were scripts you could alter, or codes to enter, that would let you add more party members. I'm sure someone will come up with something in DA.

I missed the bg six member party. In this game it might be too much though. Still, if it's moddable, I will try with five or six member parties. Of course one needs to offset the imbalance it creates by playing on harder difficulty.

Agreed. I would love to play a 5 party game on nightmare difficulty

After WoW I think a lot of people have the idea of 5 person dungeons engraved in their heads.

I want 7.5 party members. In fact, I demand it.

It actually took me forever to get used to 5-person groups in WoW after playing 6-person groups in Final Fantasy 11 for years.Trajan60 wrote...

So many of the fights in DAO have you outnumbered 3 or 4 to 1, i tihnk a 5th character would make it more reasonable.

Incidentally, I think you can add party members via the console, if you're playing on the pc:

If you're playing with extra party members, however, I don't know that they'll show up during cutscenes.

ooh, I'll have to try my next play through with all the modding goodies and expanded party size. I'd never keep the dog in my party if I'd had to stick with four member party.

no i dont think it would, aside from a few fights where things are grossly out numbered, i dont see a use for a fifth party member

I hate limitations...from a story standpoint it doesn't make sense even if from a gameplay/balance...We are in the middle of a Blight...I have 7..8? what is it? people all following me to END this Blight and gladly give their lives...but...sorry only 3 of you can come with me..rest of you sit in camp and rub on each other or something..
it makes no sense...some scenerio's maybe...overall..no.
And yes I can only imagine what a nightmare balancing that many team members in a fight would be like...still..I've never liked that kind of limitation..it just doesn't make sense.
"yah we have this BBEG we have to kill or every living thing on the planet will die...BUT we can only do it 4 at a time!"
yah ok,
and damnit GIVE ME BACK THE ABILITY TO MAKE MY ENTIRE PARTY!!!!! if I choose too...miss out on some backstory/romances/etc..FINE..but damnit let me do it if I so choose

More party slots would be nice to get more of the banter but thats about it. People would still be ****ing about how the mages are overpowered anyway.

I would prefer a 5-person party. Reminds me of Bard's Tale, maybe, my suggestion of a compromise: just make a summons more common and especially more user friendly... that way you have five, but the fifth is a warm body with less maintenance and need for the infrastructure. You have one summon slot. It's usually filled with something. Right now I haven't used a summon ever in DAO: for mage it's a T4 spell animate dead but you have to control it manually apparently... and the ranger supposedly disappears whenever you zone...? Neither of these issues have me wanting to get to the point of using those, so I haven't.

Having played the game on the xbox I don't know whether I would be able to manage more than 4 characters. I'm sure it would be nice on the pc though.

Problem with 4 party members is you have tank, heals and 2 dps, which means you basically have to have Alister and Wynne in party unless your main covers one of those roles. morrigan is also almost a must for her crowd control abilites, 4 feels like it just limits the options as far as party combinations go a bit.

Mount & blade allows you to control a small army of 30-100 soldiers. The least dragon age should let us control is 10-12 party members. Sten is a very interesting character and I would of loved to have him in my party. But alistair, leilana and my dog were more important.

No, not really with the current user interface and control mechanics. Kinda tempting from increased tactical depth point of view, tho...

With NWN2 I used console commands to have a 6 person party. Six person party was in all the early CRPGs, from the old AD&D gold box series, and including the Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale series. I loved that you could make your entire party as well. I offset having 2 extra party members by maximizing the difficulty and I think it balanced out pretty well. I'll do the same in this game now that I know its available.
I'd love to see them return to this formula. I also miss being able to select formations.

What I'd prefer, honestly, is a fifth party slot exclusively for the Dog.
The Dog just doesn't measure up to any of the other characters, and feels like a waste of a slot with him in the party. But I'd like to have him in the party.
Perhaps I'll try adding the Dog through the console.
