This is the thread I was talking about
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/300/index/6498551/3

The instruction on how to edit your savegame is in the first post on page 1.

For Nethaniel

you pretty much have to add the

index value for Nathenial_Approvaland change its data value 100 (for 100 approval)
change the Nathaniel_friendly_Eligable data value to 1
change the Nathaniel_died_at_final_battle (I think that is what is called) and change its value to 0

If you are not technically inclined, you should just use one of the pre-made backgrounds.  They don't have import issues.

SPOILER ALERT!

Okay, when Nathaniel mentioned “a dwarf from Vigil’s keep,” my reaction was: “OMFG, Oghren!”
Let me explain something to the writers at Bioware: there is good teasing, and there is bad teasing. Having the afore-mentioned dwarf be the crazy chemist dwarf’s brother instead of Oghren is 100% not kosher. I have decided that I can’t get enough Oghren, and I don’t care if he simply walks into the middle of a cutscene, shouts, “Ass-chaps!” and walks out. I got a fever, and the only prescription is more Oghren.

Just to check - is Nathaniel's non-appearance definitely a bug? They've not retconned to say that saving Amaranthine=Vigil and all companions die? There's a bit on this page (http://dragonage.wik...he_Conspirators) that made me worried that his death'd be canon with at saved city. Has anyone imported a game (particularly on PC) where they saved the city and got the Act III quest? if so, was Nat. in your party or did it just say he survived?

So: I finally got the quest. Biggest problem here is that the official game guide lies. About a few things, really.

Anyhow, about this quest:
Yes, the Architect must be alive. Also, I had Nathaniel in my active party at the end (simply because he's all for letting the Architect live, even though I personally think it's a terrible idea), but I'm not sure if this is absolutely necessary, since he lives when I leave him behind, anyway (upgrades and all that: I save Amaranthine).

In short: this isn't bugged (on xbox, at least). It just has some very specific trigger requirements. Shame, really, considering how awesome it is.

the Architect survived on my save, but I still got the "fool's gold' quest...

and I just reached act 3 and can't see Nathaniel sister anywhere :/
which commands do I have to input on the console to activate Finding Nathaniel quest?

I would just like some official confirmation on what exactly triggers this quest. Other people on these forums have stated that the flag requirements show the Architect doesn't have to be alive, just Nathaniel and he has to have stayed in the Wardens. I don't generally use save game editors so I couldn't say.

However, I have seen others say that they killed the Architect but get this quest and Nathaniel still refers to the Architect as being alive. So some dev confirmation on the triggers would be nice. Obviously Nathaniel needs to be alive - but the import feature seems to assume that if you left him at the Keep and save the City then he dies even if the epilogue says he lives.

Yea, if you got Fools Gold, you won't get Nate's quest.

@elessara - it seems the architect need not be alive - I remember a dev comment indicating that the patch was going to fix this, or they were looking into addressing this with the patch.  Couldn't for the life of me tell you what thread I saw that in, though.  The import thing about him living/dying if left at the keep, I don't know what the story is with that.

@TJPags .... heh you may have seen it in another thread where I was whining about the same issue but I don't think a dev responded there.

lol - no, i'm petty sure I saw it somewhere, because I remember being rather adamant that the Architect living WAS a requirement for this quest.  So I definitely remember seeing a comment somewhere that shot that theory down.

Its just alive and made a warden I think.  I applied the patch and tested it on Nate.  He referred to the correct state of being of the Architect in my saved game, ie, dead.

I have played through twice and completed the Nathaniel quest with Awakening saves where I killed the Architect, recruited Nathaniel, made him a warden found his sister and saved Vigil's Keep while Amaranthine was destroyed.

On my third playthrough, I got Fool's Gold instead and the only difference is I saved Amaranthine and Vigil's Keep was fully upgraded.  I did leave Nathaniel at the keep since I was playing a rogue already.  It may be considered that he fell when the Keep was attacked since I was not there to defend it.

You also get at least one extra quest if you save Vigil's Keep and let Amaranthine fall.
