Ok, so I was already getting annoyed with anders for being so down in the dumps by the end of act 1, then bethany (the only other mage with healing) goes and dies so i'm left with no choice.  if you're going to kill off the only other mage in the game who has access to healing then please give us another choice for healing.  I feel like anders is sort of forced on you for acts 2 and 3, especially at the higher difficulties.  don't get me wrong, is is an awesome healer, if you spec into his specialty talents he is an amazing support mage, but the fact is he is the ONLY healing mage after act 1.  even if you are a mage you only get 1 healing spell, which is on its really long cooldown.

any alternative healing methods available?  with very few varieties of healing potions it's rather hard.

I was also disappointed with this. Looks like I'll be forced into either having no healing mage, or taking the role up myself. Can't say I'm an Anders fan. The way he "frolicks" doesn't sit right with me.

We had Wynne in Origins as a healbot. I expected this and I am not angry about it.

And a Mage Hawke can be as good healer as him. Spirit Healer spec is there for a reason.

well i did my rogue playthrough, was gonna do mage hard and then warrior nightmare, although If I'm going to be the healer I may do the mage on nightmare so I have more heals at a higher difficulty.

and in DAO you could have morrigan as a healer also, just needed to make her second specialty spirit healer as well. in DA2 it's either you or anders after act 1.

Is a healer required on normal (and possibly hard) difficulty?
With my rouge character I'm planning on using Bethany and/or Merrill as my party mages, and with the mage character I'm going to start now I would prefer not to feel forced into going the Spirit Healer route (though taking the heal spell is probably still a good idea?) if I want to be either the only mage in the party most of the time, or having Merrill with me as well.

Morrigan was just adequate as a healer and never topped Wynne. Her SS skill where moot as a healer and Wynne at a very early stage had everything you needed, HoTs, Tactic slots, etc.

Can't speak for anyone else, but screw RP purposes.  I always respecced Morrigan to SH as soon as I got her.  SS was awful, and she was a much more interesting character to have in the group than grandma.

Outside of having just the default heal spell, I wanna say no for sure on Normal.  It may even be doable on Hard, but it depends entirely on your group and gear, and you would probably at least want Greater Heal.  Health Potions can usually get you by on everything outside of boss fights.

I am also disappointed in this. Why they had to take the tree with the heal ability out of Merrill's skills I don't know.

I used Morrigan over Wynne all the time, but mostly because I liked Morrigan tons and didn't care for Wynne.

I was hoping to use Merrill as a healer too, but no worries because Anders is a great healer.
I just use Merrill as a Primal beast. She is wicked.

Merrill gets no heal spells. Creation is locked out for her. She has an aura that heals herself but that is it. She's a blood mage. Anders is your only healing choice unless Hawke goes spirit healer and yes you need a dedicated healer in nightmare. That one heal will not suffice. Anders is a really good healer though. He can switch to Justice and basically get rid of cooldowns and switch back and heal. The cooldowns for those sustained modes aren't long at all.

Just a heads up, in Nightmare the enemy mages will literally one shot your entire party with explosive balls of randomness.

I have been playing Nightmare with no healer so far (bout to hit 7) and it has served me well enough. I do admit that I've considered adding a heal to Beth since each potion is a 40s hit.
Party: DW Hawk (all talents in dw) Ava, Beth (elemental/arcane), Var Archery.

So far on Nightmare, the only heal I've needed is Anders with the 80% version.  Everything else just gets exploded. It gets even better once you put the damage transferring abilities on Aveline.
