The question remains,
I know there are 12781929 threads like this but hopefully this one is answered.
About to start the game, reading the guide.....I desperately do want to play as a mage, yet since I am a dirty completionist It would be FAR easier to get Bethany to full friendship by the end of act one than Carver, AND I DESPISE THAT BILE SAC!
What do you all recommened?
Mage Vs Warrior?

If you're a dirty completionist, then I assume you have multiple games you intend to import (don't expect all of your choices in Origins - that can/should affect DA2 - to work, such as romances) multiple games. If your Circle Mage is female, play as a female mage and make her resemble your mage in Origins - you can get some fun out of the return character, Cullen, when he compares Hawke to the Warden. Any other game where you don't intend to be a rogue, play a two-handed warrior (now the only non-tank warrior) or a damage dealer mage (Force Mage is fun to watch, but you lose the actual excitement of the game), preferrably Blood Mage (assuming you choose any spec.).
Warrior best played as a Reaver or Berserker. Excitement ensures when you're a Reaver with only 5 HP left. Mage is pointless as a Spirit Healer, unless...
If you want to play on Nightmare, your Hawke needs to be a Spirit Healer mage, or a rogue Shadow AND Assassin, otherwise don't bother. Warrior is useless on Nightmare, without tireless puring over stats and potions/posion.
Mage vs. warrior? Warrior for the serious player, mage for the laid back.

They're very useful but, when I don't bring Aveline/Fenris, it's fine.

ROGUE! fast and deadly. you can max up your cunning and land critical hits, and if you bring along Anders he can give you some sustained effects that make you even faster.
p.s. scrap archery. ignore it. do daggers and max out all moves from the ability tree for dual weapon. use them the most. then select abilities from assassin, dualist, and scoundrel. Make sure for those three to concentrate MOST on selecting passive abilities and sustained abilities. However, there is a rather powerful active ability that kills enemies in one shot for assassin (called pinpoint strikes, but also assassinate and overkill - those are amazing). get that.

I can SOLO Nightmare as a Mage I can't do that as a warrior.
Sorry Arcane Warrior>Mages > Rouges >Warrior.
The only reason to play warrior or rouge is to not hear Carver's whining.

Rogue>Mage>Warrior.
Mostly because Warrior was gimped though in DA2, other than tanking, they can't really do anything well.
All the more reason to seriously look at how classes are handled and provide every class with a way to fill multiple roles effectively.
