1. If you are relying on your tactics slots a lot, make sure they are set up correctly. It does you no good to have Avelin running around trying to hit weak mobs when there are assassins or eliets (IE boss level named mobs, etc) running around pwning your party. I find it best to have her sit on the high-profile mobs while my party, in all situations, nukes all the adds down and then focuses on the big mobs. If your DPS is up to par, the adds should never really be a problem to melt.
2. Sword and shield is your friend... there are a lot of nice talents in there that help a great deal with crowd control and also allow her to generate more threat across multiple targets.. remember, a little threat goes a long way on mobs that die very easily, and while your party is dealing with those, she can be focusing on the tougher mobs, so that when the party is ready, your tank already has a good threat lead.
3. Stamina is your friend. I made the mistake early of putting way too much into constitution, but aveline wound up with such a tiny stamina pool that all I ever heard was her complaining about being out of breath. Make sure she can last a decent amount of time in a fight, and either assume exclusive direct control of her, dictating all of her actions so she doesn't waste stamina, or come up with a really intricate set of tactics for her.

Thanks for the help. Btw, i found that my archer has the highest dps (i'm curecntly in act 2) it was like 269 - 289 per shot. Maybe it is the main trouble i keep losing aggro.Ramtha wrote...
Personally, the following was helpful:

But I'm still having issues with that rogues that teleport and backstab somebody. They hit for way too much damage and sometimes they don't target aveline....
How do you handle them?
Also, isn't there any way for a 2h warrior be effective as a tank on nightmare? The lack of offensive habilities for sword and shield really annoys me.
When carver whirlwinds a pack of enemies , staggers them all and my mage hawke finishes them off with lightning I start to question why am I not using another mage instead of aveline
