**Before I get started I'd just like to tell you to read through this before posting any comments related to my opinions and thoughts discussed in the topic. I payed the $60 for Dragon Age 2, so like everyone else, I am entitled to it.
In January I purchased Mass Effect 2 without ever having played Mass Effect and I loved it. It brought an all new experience to a "shooter/rpg" game that I havent seen before. To me it was truely innovative and I ended up playing through it 3 times. After a while I started looking around for something like Baldur's Gate 2 since it had been a long time since i played it and i have always loved that game. I remember getting it when it first came out and loving every second being emmersed in the story and gameplay. I ended up losing it and re-buying it probably 3 or 4 times. So i started digging and ended up giving Dragon Age Origins a try. At first I was skeptical about the graphic's, since i have been so used to playing Crysis and games of that graphic caliber, but quickly looked beyond that after getting into the story and strategy of the game. I enjoyed the length of the game and how each character had his/her own unique personality and how the game was very detailed. During the weeks before Dragon Age 2 was released i played the demo and noticed it was EXACTLY the same, but didn't think it wasn't half bad. The graphics were somewhat improved, and the fighting style didn't bother me too much. I knew it was a demo so it wouldnt have all the detailes fleshed out yet, so i went ahead and pre-ordered the game.
On the release date I rushed to get the game and Installed that beast as fast as I could ready to start a new journey thanks to Bioware. The game had changed, some for the good, some for the worse. Let me elaborate.
"My" Good opinions of the game-
I think the graphic changes to the game aren't exactly "better", i think they used a different "style" that might attract a certain group of people. The main character models are good, but when talking to Sandal and Bodahm for the first time i noticed they looked very different. They didn't look like the same characters, except for maybe a few main features. Maybe it's just me, but their eyes looked huge. Other than that, the city looks great.
The Talent/Ability Tree doesn't bother me at all. It's nice to see each tree set apart from eachother based on the focus of skills.
"My" Bad opinions-
This could be just me, but I don't feel compelled to keep playing like I have with great RPG games such as BG1&2 and DA:O. I really try to get into it, but it doesn't take long for me to lose interest.
The new generic equiptment icons aren't an improvement at all. I love seeing what the actual dagger, shield, ring, looks like in the inventory. Not just the same and some stars.
The Menus, Journal, Stats, Inventory, all that. It all looks way too simplified and generic. It lacks the detail and feeling of the original DA:O.
----- I keep seeing people saying about how Bioware has tried to "dumb down" DA and make it better for console's, but weren't they successful with the Original Dragon Age? I did not expect Dragon Age 2 to be the same game AT ALL. But i expected there to be something that draws me in and wants me to keep playing, and there isn't. I know moneys a big part of the changes and makin it better for "some" console players, but anyone who knows anything about marketing and business knows it's much better to have a fan base that is LOYAL to you and your brand, than to get short term gain, by changing your product to fit a NEW target market. Those LOYAL to your brand will keep buying your products and recommend the product to people they know. Changing a product that fans have become loyal to, will hurt much more by far in the long run. I was a loyal fan to Bioware, which is why I went to them and bought Mass Effect 2 for no other reason that it was from Bioware. Then i played Dragon Age: Origins and once again, fell in love with the style Bioware was bringing to RPG. Now, with Dragon Age 2, the product doesn't fit the brand.
***** Those are just my thoughts as a Bioware fan and long-time player. And I chose to post this in a new topic, because I felt this was a story as much as a review of a new game. Thanks!
