I'm romancing Merril with my smarmy jokester Mage Hawke and I gotta say...I almost feel a little bit sickened by it.

This isn't to say that I hate Merril as a character or anything but my character has made it clear his disdain for blood magic and he pretty much has prevented her from doing anything she wants in the name of furthering the Dalish (including continuing her investigation of The Mirror). Furthermore, when I handed her the Halla figure...my Hawke kind of mocked the Dalish's reverence of the creature. I had started the game with the intent of romancing Merril but she kept on pushing me away and that lead me to Isabella. I slept with Isabella, she became my good friend...and then a bunch of cut scenes with her and Merril started popping up whenever I visited The Hanged Man. It became clear to me that Isabella and Merril were best friends...my Hawke being the smarmy smart alleck that he is simply shrugged it off.

Eventually me and Merril had a confrontation where she berated me for keeping her from doing anything for her clan and keeping a Dalish artifact from her, I explained that this was only for her safety...and she kicked me the hell out of her house and told me she never wanted to see me again. Dejected I returned to the Hawke Estate only to find her there waiting for me...and it turns out that three years of me keeping her down, mocking her culture, and sleeping with her best friend paid off in the type of awkward "We used to hate each other sex" that can only be properly explained through experience.

Merril has moved in with me and become my permanent girlfriend but my Hawke also has a very special connection with Isabella. He became the Champion largely because his love for her and want to keep his friend provoked him into a duel with The Arishok and she has stayed in Kirkwall into Act Three largely because of the connection she feels with Hawke. Going into Act Three I have no idea what my Hawke should do, he largely loves Merril and cares for her deeply...but he did a lot to save Isabella and they connect with one another at a very large level. With his mother dead and Merril being the only company he has in his house it's hard to say whether or not a true romance with Isabella is even possible now (I've given both Isabella and Merril their Act II gifts) and it's even harder for me to get a grasp on what my character wants.

I don't know if BioWare planned for a multi-layered and complex love triangle like this...but it's certainly interesting and without a doubt the most complicated romance arc I've ever experienced in a BioWare game. And I mean that in a good way.

Hey man I have asked the below question a few places but have not got a response. Seeing as you have experienced this I was wondering if you could help me out.

I don't think I got a flirt option with Isabella the very first time I went to see her in the hanged man after I recruited her. She told me that a friend of hers needed help and I got 10 friendship points. Did I miss something here? And if I did miss something do I need to go back and redo this part inorder to romance?

I didn't get any overt flirtatious options with Isabella until Act II and then the romance picked up fairly quickly. If you're able to flirt with her in Act I, I never did but it didn't prevent me from doing the romance. After The Deep Roads expedition you should be able to flirt with her openly and even more so after you give her a gift (a miniature boat you find somewhere in Dark Town during a quest). You haven't screwed anything up.

No worries and good luck with romancing Isabella. She's got a lot more depth than she lets on.

And hanging around her has forced me to make a double entendre out of that last statement.

Hey one more Question, where does my friendship meter need to be before "to catch a thief" to make sure she comes back for act 3? Any Idea?  I guess I enjoy that character and want to make sure she is there the entire game so how exactly do I make sure she stays..lol.

I don't know where the specific meter has to be located but my Hawke is a loyal friend and his interactions with The Arishok told him that the big bad Quanari wouldn't be leaving until Kirkwall is buried under ground. I was far enough on the friendship meter to get the bonus and I just sided with Isabella the entire time, she left after I got the book back but she came back and gave The Arishok the book. It was only when The Arishok wanted to take Isabella back with him that me and the Qunari fought.

I'm also romancing Merril so I guess a romance isn't completely needed for it to happen...but if you're just adamant in your defense of her than you should be fine.

Is it overtly difficult to increase your friendship. Basically I am just taking her with me and watching the meter making sure it is going one way, by doing that and getting her the gift in act 2 I should be at an acceptable level I take it.

Yeah man, you should be fine. I didn't take Isabella on all of my quests (just some when I felt it was appropriate) and my meter was fine. Just take her when it matters.

I'm going to keep playing into Act Three and see if the conflict with the mages provokes anything, it's kind of interesting that Isabella and my Hawke are very good friends who are semi-romantically involved whilst Merril and my Hawke are complete rivals yet she lives with my Hawke. It makes the conflict a little deeper since he cares for both of them greatly...just in completely different ways. I wonder if I will get a confrontation. It's no secret that my Hawke is involved with Merril and Isabella even asked me about it...though Hawke defused that by flirting with her, it's just all very complicated lol.

I LOVE the fact that rivalry doesn't lock you out of a romance. So true to life.

In my story, I woo'ed Isabella and then had Merril as perm girlfriend. I always gave into Merril's requests and turned down Isabella at the Qunari Book quest and she escaped with the book and never returned. Now when i finished the story and the narration of the dward ended, he said the Seeker that everntually the Champion seperated from his companions and that only Isabella stayed with him .... This is trully akward and wierd... thoughts ?

Hmmm...that sounds more like a glitch than an actual romantic thing. Where I am right now my Isabella is still hanging about The Hanged Man and Merril is living with Hawke. I'm going to give them both their Act III gifts and pursue a romance until confronted, my codex entries peg Merril as my lover and my companions recognize her as such. Maybe I'm reading too much into the Isabella romance and maybe it's long gone. We slept together, I tried to initiate something with her, she turned me down, I ended up living with Merril, but I also saved her from The Arishok in an epic one on one battle that The Seeker described as "romantic". When I finish the game, I'll give you guys an update...but has anyone else experienced an overt love triangle like this?
