Is it possible to have a 3 mage + rogue (for lock picking/ranged support) on nightmare difficulty?

My thoughts on this topic is that it can be possible with proper planning, and this is my idea for each mage.

Hawke Mage (Battle Mage): Mix of offensive and defensive magic, gylphs and knockback spells to keep enemies off their feet

Anders (Healer/support): Primarily focuses on healing and support spells that boost the party and revives if needed

Merrill (Damage Dealer): Offensive spells and hexes to weaken opponents

Varric (Ranged Support, lock picking): Self explanitory

What is everyones thoughts on this party set up?  Is it viable or far too squishy? I also want to keep Merrill since I intend to have her as my romance for Mage Hawke.

I'm not going to say it can't work, but it will be difficult because everyone in your party is squishy. Not to mention the lack of a warrior for staggered CCC set ups.

I'd be curious whether that works. In my experience so far you absolutely need a tank. No clue whether a mage can tank.

enemy archer pew pew pew, stunlock, dead mage, enjoy. Although if you really abuse terrain maybe it'll work? Boss battle will be a kite-fest though, if you like that kind of thing go for it.

It's either going to A.) not work or B.) work but require stupid amounts of kiting to make it work.

Having an Improved Stonewall tank is pretty much a requirement for a sane Nightmare playthrough imo.

I'm not sane though :>

So going to give this a shot for my own amusement and will report back my results!

You're pretty much going to have to micromanage constantly and pick off ranged immediately, but it would more than likely work...

With massive amounts of reloading on assassins of course.

Please report the results. I'm really curious how a party without a tank would work.

I recently switched to Isabela +3 mages. All 3 mages have elemental weapons (with backup staffsiin inventory if immunities encountered) and it works fine. 5% speed increase for Isabela friendship is more valuable than any range weapon range.

I've discovered so much CC a mage can do by themselves.. I'll hit someone with Cone of Cold, they'll be frozen or brittle or what-not, then I hit them with a Fist of the Maker, this knocks them to the gound, then a Telekenetic Burst, this launches them all over the place (because they're already on the ground, I believe it works ALL the time if they're knocked down) and then proceed to hit them with a Gravitic Ring so they can't escape.. followed by a Virulent Walking Bomb on whichever one is lowest while another Mage casts AoE's upon all of them.

On that same setup, my mage with Cone of Cold and the Force Mage spells also has Crushing Prison, which seems to be a powerful single target version of Gravitic Ring, couple those two together, and watch even certain bosses have little to no room to do anything to your party.

I imagine adding another mage, and a Rogue's multitude of survivability skills (chameleon, miasmic, confuse, decoy) and I'm assuming it'd work. To what extent? I don't know. you'd have to babysit your Rogue so that all the AoE from the other party members isn't causing too much damage to them.

It could work imo.

Infact I just switched to 3 mages with Isabel.  I'll post how it works out and I was thinking about switching to nightmare.  I'm on hard atm.  No doubt 3 mages attacking a boss can do serious damage.  It all depends on setup.

If you did want to tank a mage, I'd go Blood Mage with arcane shield and possibly rock armor.  You could also setup Merril to tank.  She has Blood mage abilities and also has the ability to suck people towards her and cause dmg.  So it may be something to look into.  I think she also has the ability to teleport so that could be very helpful.

I just see blood mage working because you could increase con to prevent a quick death.

I will be doing a 3 mage party on nightmare for my next run.  I'm not sure if I am gonna use a rogue or not, but If my plan works out, it really will not matter who your 4th is.  As long as it's some type of melee you shouldn't have any problems with 3 mages.

I do a 3 Mage + Avelene and it works great.

All Mages have a tactic slot for healing if needed,

Merril does Debuff & Damage
Anders Does Damage
Hawke Does Damage + Spirit Heal and Force Mage
Avelene plays human shield.

The trio of mages works great at higher levels though, may not be as effective at lower levels.

Im tempted to try a new game, with
Anders,
Merril
Fenris
and Hawke next.

Man I'm running 3 mages with Isabel atm and we just own.  The enemy doesn't even get a chance to move.  I'm still on hard but I'm very tempted to bump it to nightmare.

Plus it's just kind of thrown together builds.

I think a blood mage /high con Merril could work as a tank on Nightmare if you get Galvanize + Rock Armor and if you can buy the 80gp ring that provides immunity to knockback

I have saved games named "****ing Assassins" for this very reason.  And that's with a tank.  Can't imagine playing with everyone as assassin-bait.

Not bad at all as long as it feels the wrath of the full group.  I just faught an assassin who tried to take my group on solo and dominated it.  He didn't even have time to move.

Any assassin takes high priority when I see one.  It doesn't matter how badly I am surrounded.
