I have a desktop and laptop. Is there any way to "deactivate" DA2 on my Desktop, activate it on my Laptop when I'm out of town, deactive my Laptop, then reactivate my Desktop? Doesn't matter to me that it would essentially be two games (characters) at once.
Installing on more than 1 PC

I wouldn't imagine this would be an issue at all, have you tried it yet? I wasn't aware that BioWare games limited installations.
You could always edit the saves directory to save on a flashdrive, then use that when playing DA2 so you'll always have your save. Might require some inf and/or registry editing.
Edit:
Dragon Age 2 Physical & Digital PC/Mac DRM are as follows:
No disc check, you do not need the disc in drive to play.
No limit on the total number of PCs you can install the game on.
There is a limit to the number of unique/different PCs that can play the game within a time window (if online) [5 PCs in 24hrs].
After
each new install there is a 1-time online check needed the next time
you play, requiring a log in to your EA account to verify game
ownership. If you are a member of these forums, you already have an EA
account – just use the same email/password.
You
can play offline thereafter - the game will NOT require any subsequent
login checks. If online, a game ownership check happens each time you
play.
Steam versions use Steam DRM, no other DRM is added, which means:
No disc check, it is used for digital game versions purchased from Steam only.
No limit to the total number of PCs you can install the game on.

Steam pre-loads use Steam release control – you will not be able to play until the release day/time has passed for that region.
Well, you're smarter than me for finding that! Thanks man. I'll try it out when I get back in town and see how it works out and put up an update. It would kinda be cool to take my saves directory with me on my travels.

I have the game installed on my desktop and laptop at this moment.
There are unlimited installations allowed, but other restrictions (such as it can only be started on 5 unique computers per 24 hours or something).

I think this is the answer I've been searching for for the last 2 hours. I wish there was a search box instead of having to go through page by page for help. Took me about 2 main forum pages and 8 pages before I stumbled upon this one. I hope this helps my problem. Keeps saying setup error please reinstall game and I did 3 times before giving up very frustrated and thinking I would not be able to play the game again. Guess I just have to wait till tomorrow to try again. Thank you in advance.

I like this kind of DRM it protects the game against piracy but also does not limit the user experience

It sounds like y'all that have a copy on both machines are using discs for installation. Mine is downloaded and I can't download another on my laptop using the same key ("already used" or something like that). Any advice so that I, too, can get the game on my laptop?

Mine is a digital download from the EA Store. Where did you get yours from?

nothing about smarts, there's a sticky in the general discussion(the prob should move it to this section now, or at least a copy of it with the pc relavent part) which tells us the drm etc of the game.

OK, so now I have read the owners manual and followed the instructions to load onto another PC using the EA store EA Download Manager, but when I log in and it comes up with DA II ready to download and I press that, I get "Only one game can be installed at a time. Please try again after your current installation is completed." I don't have anything downloading, and I've re-started to clear things, but I get that same message. Help!

This is clearily not the issue you think it is then. Try removing the DL manager and reinstalling it. Maybe something is stuck.
