I'm playing a 2H warrior focusing on damage, with Anders for healing, Varric for crowd control. and I want to use Merril for AOE and damage-dealing. What skill trees/abilities should I focus on? Should I continue to upgrade primal? Or respec and go into elemental? And what about her Specialization tree?
Overall, what is the most effective way to use Merril?
Best Abilities for Merril?

I found entropy spells very useful with Merrill, though I rarely use her because my hawke is mage lol sorry, not really any help, right.

For AoE and damage, the primal line gets my vote. Fully upgraded Tempest and Chain lightning are ridiculously powerful. And the stone fist is always good to knock mages down and keep them from casting, as well as petrify to lock down troublesome enemies.
The first couple entropy spells, horror and that curse one (forget its name) are also useful against the more powerful baddies. I dont like her blood magic spells because she keeps getting herself killed when using it unless you micromanage her skills. But her wrath of the elven, or whatever its called, combined with rock armor is pretty nice if she ends up taking aggro.

I had her focusing on CC. Horror, Crushing Prison, Sleep (all upgraded) and then a few other useful abilities like Group Arcane Shield and Barrier to help ease my damage intake. I also gave her Rock Armor, and it's a pretty huge boost to her survivability. I'm working my way towards Improved Cone of Cold now to take advantage of cross-class combos.
Actually... both my Merril and Anders are built completely for CC and party buffs. I don't even think I have an offensive ability in their tactics at all. All of my party's damage comes from my Rogue Hawke.

Thanks! That is quite helpful. I didn't really consider rock armor, because I was thinking of maximizing damage, but that is a good way to help keep her alive when all the enemies decide they're tired of being electrocuted

Wrath of the Elvhen hands down. It's a mana-based sustainable, which means it's free for Merrill. Blood of the First + Rock Armor + Arcane Shield + Wrath of the Elvhen = Merrill Tank. :-)
Oh, and Horror. It's the ability that every Mage should get. Horror. It works on the Mature Dragon, and Ogres. Don't you love to see an Ogre clutch his head in agony? Or a Dragon twitching her neck uncontrollably due to your magic (if only for about 2 seconds)? Get Horror.
