This side quest in act 3 is bugged for me at least. I went into the Wounded Coast as I'm supposed to but at the bandit camp first there was no one there. As I turn to leave the bandit leader stands at the front of the camp but he just stands there, and nothing happens.
This happened to anyone else?

Glad it's not just me then.

The coast is clear. *ba-dum-tsh*
I'm also haunted by this unfinished quest. It's just as you say; Bandit Leader pops up behind you and assumes the role of Queen's Guard.

Yep, I was actually going to post an identical thread before I found this...same exact problem as stated, tried leaving and coming back and completing other quests and coming back, but no luck.

I ran into the same problem and then I noticed something very odd....
The Prima guide says the quest doesn't exist.
I couldn't find any mention of it anywhere.
So I have to wonder if the bug isn't that the quest is unfinishable but that it activated to begin with.
Oh and OP, careful with the bumping. Some of the moderators consider bumping your own thread spam.

Why ><? It's a bugged quest that needs to be brought up and bumping it makes it so people reply to this thread and don't make others simply because they don't find this one...which would be spam.
Also hoping that if it's on the first page that Bioware guys actually notice it. It's hard when over half of the first page is filled with stickies.

Same problem here. I just had to finished the game without it.

Ditto, Bandit leader appears but does nothing and is impossible to interact with. Same as stated by OP. also found another bugged quest. "Sketchy on the details" it never completes.

Bumping this up since it was getting pushed back and another thread was made because of it.

Bump
If this quest isn't documented in the strategy guide then is it possible that it's supposed to be activated with a piece of DLC that's not been released yet?

I'm asking this again, hopefully this time this is the right place
.
So I installed Patch 1.02, killed the Arishok and was eager to see to what extent the bug about this quest was fixed. I never got the letter, though. Do I have to have made specific choices in the past in order to be able to initiate this quest or is it another problem that I have? (If this helps, I've been a very vocal supporter of the mages and I've just located the three mages for Meridith. I've accepted Orsino's Best Served Cold, but I dare not complete it until I kill the High Dragon. Either way, as I remember from my first playthrough, this was one of the first letters I got in the Hawke estate.)

You only get 'Who needs rescuing' if you helped Fenyriel escape during Night Terrors in act 2 (I believe). In any case, it's still not 100% functioning.

Which is what I did and I have a nice letter from him from Tevinter. I'm okay with the side quest not functioning, as long as when I import my save to DA2:Expansion/DLC or DA3 it doesn't bring up "the champion couldn't rescue [insert the name of the person who actually needs rescuing]" or anything like that
