Upgrading companion armor?

Someone let me know if I understand this properly.

You chose one of three clases for Hawke, each has diferent sets of armor. (robes, leather, plate)
All the companions in the game do not equip armor that you find, but rather companion-only armor.
Armor for all three class types will continue to drop in the game, even though 2/3 of it will be largely useless to your Hawke's class.
All of the bonus content armor sets(deadspace, blood dragon) are useless to a mage Hawke and you may as well vendor them since no one else can equip them.

Sounds rather ****ty to me that more than half the equipment drops are useless to you, no matter what. Must suck for people who baught deadspace 2 just for the dragon age 2 armor and then rolled a class that doesn't use it.

Does this change later in the game? I admit, I'm only on chapter one, but it's unusual that theres no armor upgrades for your buddies at all... especialy when you pick up all this great stuff that would suit their classes. Maybe it's just not implemented yet? Do I purchase DLC to allow me to equip my allies with armor?

I can tell them what rings to wear, how to put on their belt, and what weapon to use... but my inventory of armors are usless? If they want my allies to keep their unique look, they could simply have the armor not change their appearance or at least include companion specific armor upgrades at shops and drops from monsters.

Your allies armor upgrades its stats as they level. And they will change into new appearances as things progress. My Aveline is on her third suit.

Fair enough, at least they upgrade on their own... but still rather disappointing that over half the armor you pick up in the game is useless to you. What kind of design feature is that?

That's actually pretty standard. Not really all that different from getting a bunch of junk that's clearly inferior to what you already have. It's embryonic cash as loot.

ya not being able to give my companions a new piece after a boss fight was a let down. As a mage I'm going to be rolling in gold at the end of this game now.

Each companion also has special upgrades that you can buy.

If you look at your companions paper doll, under their armor there are 4 slots. These are the upgrade slot that you can buy (or find?).

I m still just in Act 1, and there are 2 upgrades that you can find on vendors. You have to look though under the crafting heading.

For example, 1 upgrade was for Varric giving his armor 1 rune slot.

While i do prefer the unique look of the companions armor, i do agree with your points.

I hate trash loot. I just find it entirely a wate of space and could have easily been replaced by just gold. Some loot is great to pick up i agree, but excess amounts of unneeded and trash loot just grates on my nerves.

Now to deal with all the spare armor could i would have added some sort of crafting system that lets you break down a piece of armor to upgrade other bits of armor with. That could work great with companion and your own armor.

Welcome to the no win scenario!

While I also would rather not bother with trash loot.....

If the game did not have it many would rip it apart for having a 'dumbed down' loot system.

If all loot dropped was useful, you would then have 20 sets of armor that would essentially be the same. Another reason many would rip the game apart.

No way for Bioware to 'win' on Inventory.

Or they could make the dlc armor available to all three classes but make them looks slightly different. So with the Dragon Armor, you can have a mage version of it where the armor is incorporated in a robe fashion, or the armor could match a roguish look. And the stats would match the primary stats of the classes.

You and me both Ron Brugal. I got my Blood Dragon armor but there is no point for it. I can't wear it because I'm a rogue and no one else can. At least I can pawn it off for some shiny gold pieces and maybe makes some potions.

I rather liked the system Dragon Age Origins had. Most equipment I found that was magical or named was pretty darn good. Even scaled up depending on when you found it. I found myself engaged by having to make equipment decisions for my companions. And at least there was a mage specialization that allowed you to use plate. Inventory sometimes felt tight because of all the "off-sets" and situational armor.. but consider that this game has a fraction of the potions and none of the crafting materials to carry around.

Armor was ugly in Orgins anyway.. I have no problem with the way they sorted out companion loot. Now they always look BA.

You can still give them amulets, rings, belt, weapons, runes.. and there's much more variety and loot options with just those in this game.

I think it's a ploy to make more mone. We'll soon have DLC for new companion armor like we did for Mass Effect 2.

Most armor you pick up is useless anyway since you have better armor equiped. Same with weapons.

Solution:
Take the loot meta-system from Origins and don't change it? :wizard:

Thinking there is a "no win" and "no solution" is bogus.  Other games have plenty of viable solutions.  Bioware prefers to simply remove systems that are wonky rather than fixing them.  It's called "streamlining" :?
