Best specialization for Rogue Archer (Leliana)?

I've read a couple of forum posts on general builds for Leliana, and indeed my question is in regards to her.

But the question if more general as well: What would the best specialization be for a Rogue Archer?

I've seen some people recommend Ranger for Leliana if you build her into being an archer, and this always struck me as somewhat odd.  Maybe it's just a mindset of World of Warcraft and D&D that archers should have pets?  You should already have a good tank, and a lot of times I even have the tank stay put while I crowd-control (with an opening Blizzard+Earthquake) and burn-down the foes from range.

Looking at the relevant Rogue specializations:
  • The stats for Ranger (+1 constitution, +5 natural resistance) don't help an archer.
  • The stats for Assassin are quite good (+2 dexterity, +2.5% critical chance) for an archer.
  • The Assassin's "Mark of Death" talent is also very good, and useful for an archer.
  • The stats for Duelist are also decent (+1 dexterity +1 damage), though the talents seem lackluster for an archer.
Given this, it seems that Assassin might (oddly) make for a good specialization for a rogue archer.

Thoughts?  If you've kept Leliana and used her as an archer, then:
1. What specialization did you use?
2. Why did you pick that choice?
3. On a replay, assuming you kept Leliana and used her as an archer, would you change specializations?

Any input is appreciated.  Thanks!

Mark of Death is only usable from close range so it won't be very good for an archer. And the other abilities for assassin are about using backstabs.

The stat bonus is a minor consideration for specializations (unless you don't plan on picking up the talents.) Duelist is very good since attack bonuses are very important for archers. Ranger is also very good because the pets are pretty tough and do a lot of damage. It's almost like having a free dog.

Ranger would be most viable choice - as Leliana is a Bard after getting summoner spec you'll get ultimate support NPC.

This is correct.

Ranger is the best spec for an archer since it's abilites actually apply.

I have been undecided myself since I generally dislike summon characters in RPG's. I was thinking about Assassin as well for Mark of Death, until I realized (as noted above) that it has a pretty short cast range. Still might be worthwhile for boss fights, but I have a hard time thinking it is more powerful than the creatures you get to summon as a ranger, though there is also the tradeoff of 1 talent point vs 4 talent points.

Oh and I should mention that ranger complements bard pretty well since it's another body getting the song effects, or if you're incapacitated by Captivating Song you still have something doing damage.

I went for Ranger and I am very pleased with my choice, its made Lelianna a very effective member of my team now. The bear is totally brutal in combat.

I went with the Ranger specialization for Lellianna. The rogue I use is a bard/duelist. Iike the summons. They can be helpful. Just be careful they don't run ahead of your group and aggro a hundred monsters. Well, not a hundred but you get the idea.

Yep Ranger pet basically doubles her DPS, just make sure you have enough stamina points to accomodate her sustained Bard Song + Pet with another 90-100 (factoring fatigue) for an Arrow of Slaying.

I went Duelist and noticed a marked jump in her DPS.

I'm going to try Ranger next time though.

I always go with Duelist for Leliana's second specialisation, because it seems the most fitting for her thematically. I can't imagine Leliana as a roughshod ranger, and conversations with her indicate she's always tried to avoid using poison or murder to get what she wants, so learning how to be an Assassin seems out of place. Considering she was primarily a dual-wielder in Leliana's Song, Duelist just seems the most fitting for her.
