Hello,

As the title suggests, I'm curious about what you all would recommend as a viable companion combination for combat?

My Hawke is a Mage, and I'm trying to specialize in Force and Spirit Healer.

At the moment, my party consists of Aveline, Merril and Carver. I don't have all the other companions yet, although I suspect I will when I get to play again. Anyway, I will probably replace Carver with Fenris, if I like that character.

On Normal difficulty, is Fenris a good tank? Aveline is a great tank, but I'm not interested in her character that much.

I will replace someone with a Rogue as well, because I want to unlock chests. So, who would be better between Sebastian, Varric and Isabella?

Finally, I will probably pursue the romance option with Merril, so I assume she should be in the party majority of the time. However, I hear Anders will make a return, and that could allow me to focus on more offensive abilities with my Mage and let Anders do the healing.

All that being said, I think I have 2 permanent companion choices, those being Merril and Fenris. It's just a matter of deciding who the third will be!

It'll be forever before you can get Sebastian. Since Varric is the first one you get, if you want to specialize him in unlocking, he'll be the easiest to do.

I imagine he'll be quite funny during the story line. (I already laughed a couple of times at his comments.) However, Easy is boring! Although, having early access to chests is nice.

That's unfortunate about Sebastian. I was looking forward to using him. I'll have to wait and see how the group looks when he does finally join though.

I read a thread stating that Isabella is close to useless on Nightmare difficulty. I'm no hardcore gamer though, and story is more important to me. So Normal will be the difficulty of my choosing. Is Isabella good on that difficulty?

Fenris is fine as a tank on normal difficulty- plenty of his abilities are defensive in nature. Aveline can't be beat, of course, but she isn't necessary. Any rogue will be fine as an unlocker if you invest in cunning, but I think doing so would be most appropriate for Isabela since the extra defense will be very helpful to her as a melee character. If you have that fancy DLC store, you can respec your companions for a price.

Follow your heart re: Anders and Merrill. Merrill can't heal, though, and I found Anders very helpful on a few of the more protracted battles. Nothing you can't work around, though, especially if you pick up the heal spell yourself.

Thank you for that information!

My decision for now will be Merril, Fenris and Isabella. I may switch Isabella for Sebastian when he is available. It will depend on if I like what he has to offer. Of course, it will also depend on if the "Duty" quest will be fixed when I return from the Deep Roads. As I entered the tunnel immediately after combat in Lowtown and recieved a glitched quest. I hope the glitch fix on these forums works for the Xbox 360!

If you already left for the deep roads you can't get Isabella at all...she'll be gone.
