so, while i love the ingame idea of locking out certain talent trees for mage npcs (merril, anders, bethany) it is rather annoying in the metagame. for exmaple, i dont want to always have to bring anders with me, and i dont want to heal. So is it possible to re-add the creation tree to Merril? i have been trying to do it via the in game console and the add talent commands, but it doesn't seem to be working. thoughts or ideas?

I was basically thinking the same thing. If you want to pursue a relationship with Merril while having a healer in the party you have to go with two mages. The only way to really get around that is if you are also playing a mage...which I might do on my second run through if the console commands are in fact unavailable.

They tried too hard to make the companions into specialists.

In Origins i had to respect Morri to a healer. Will never understand this anti-individualisation policy with restricted skills and auto-leved NPCs.

i dont mind it so much, at least on the first play through. i like to see in-game aspects mirror how the characters are supposed to act. ie, merril not having creation. its in later play throughs that it becomes annoying

Well, there is a way to at least strengthen your own character...plus add to the others as well. I stumbled upon it by accident actually. It's the runscript zz_supercrit player command. Adds 50 to strength and dex as well as 1000 to health and mana/stamina. If you by a few of the respec potions in the Black Emporium you can max out all talents and attributes. All you do is enter the command, runscript zz_supercrit player, add the addxp command, auto attrib and skills, then respect with potion. Repeat until you're maxed out. For the companions, it wont max them out but will give them a buff in mana/stamina and health. Use runscript zz_supercrit gen00fl_carver then enter. Repeat the same process using each name. It's the best we have until a mod comes along allowing more customization with companions.

Late in coming, but since I stumbled on this thread, there's a mod on the Nexus for this:
