Oh Anders you magnificently written tragic villain. I completely understand why he blew up the chantry and keeping with the appropriate dramatics my Hawke just had to kill him. Now this wasn't a templar supporting Hawke, this was a snarky gentleman rogue Hawke who while supportive of the mages wasn't going to go as far as blowing up the chantry. What bugged me about that scene was how even though Anders is willing to die and for once my Hawke is entirely serious he just walks up to Anders pulls out the murder knife (by the way the new murder knife is gorgeous) and literally stabs him in the back. Geez Hawke he's accepting his punishment at least have the decency to look him in the eyes and slit his throat.

I hope we have some kind of quest later to remove Anders from the spirit of Vengeance. It has warped and twisted him, and mellowed him out way too much.

Me too! That's the principle reason my mage Hawke stuck with him. He loves Anders, couldn't bring himself to kill him, knows Vengeance is responsible, and now wants an exorcism. Here's to hoping for some kind of Witch Hunt style DLC (with more actual closure this time around, please).

As far as I'm concerned, Anders pulled an Andraste in reverse. Which is really really fascinating when you think about it.

I was shocked, angry, and frustrated but I understood why he did it. Killing him would've only made him a martyr (Like Andraste), so instead I spared the damned fool.

Oh he's going to be a symbol for his actions regardless of what you do with him. A living symbol can still do damage on their own. A dead one may still inspire, but at least he's dead.

A much bigger martyr in a side-with-Templars scenario would be Orsino.  He held the line, only resorted to drastic measures as a response and tried to negotiate to the end.  And was killed for it.

Now that I think about this, what would happen if you don't complete the Justice side quest? It wasn't a main plot mission if I remember.

Would he just go gather the ingredients and plant the bomb himself or would this change hmm...

I also realized that Anders himself tells you what the potion does...I believe his words were something like "No, no ritual. Just add this and that and...boom" Sneaky Bioware.

I was stunned. Eyes wide and jaw all the way on the floor. And then I felt enraged like he had gone behind Hawke's back to pull this stunt. I felt the same way when Zaeed went all Rambo on his mission without any regard to the factory workers. I couldn't let Anders off the hook for it -- I sympathized, but the damage he caused was too great.

Does he do it regardless of the path you have with him right? Whether you're romancing him on friendship or rivalry? I'm really curious. It's probably something that will happen regardless. Poor Anders.

Edit:
I totally foresaw this. Anders was really mentally unstable regardless, specially when you go down the rivalry path with him. I'm in Act 2 and I'm just like I love you but calm down!

It seems it doesn't matter what you do, but I've yet to get to that point. I'm playing a snarky rogue who just lost her whole family, Carver and dad are dead, Bethany got taken by the circle, the mom died a zombie, WTF Bioware. Yeah I thought my Warden had a crappy life but at least she got a decent ending with Alistair until she disappeared but my Hawke will be officially screwed when her man goes crazy and pulls a terrorist on her.

Yeah I'm gonna finish my game and see what happens. I demand a "Anders exorcism DLC" Bioware!!!

Oooooh that was a hard part for me. My first thought was "****ING HELL, ANDERS! I KNEW IT!" Totally called him planting a bomb in the Chantry when it wasn't a potion to cure him. It's like... the one part of the entire storyline I predicted.

Anyway, I actually had to pause for a few minutes at the end to decide if what Anders had done was truly worth killing him over. Yes it was radical and brutal and probably not necessary... but so are the beginnings of most revolutions. It's the shock that the world needed.

I've believed that the treatment of the mages is terrible since the original Dragon Age. Anders is proof that a person can be a mage but does NOT have to be a blood mage. There is a balance that can be found. That's what I was pushing for throughout the entire game.

Soooo... to wrap up my rambling, I believe what he did as an individual was terrible. But as a revolutionist, as a martyr, it was necessary. I spared his life and continued my romance with him after the final battle.

Even though I knew he was going to blow up the Chantry before reaching that point in the game, I was still aghast :/ His whole disposition about it and wanting to be a martyr just irked me. I almost had no sympathy for him at that point.

Same. Except I only vocalized the GODDAMNIT ANDERS. Everything else was thought with the most ridiculous expression.

I'm so glad my Hawke has a cooler head than I do, she couldn't walk away to make tea (and not have it help any) :|

Like a few others have mentioned, I was totally going to side with the mages until Anders did that. Then I turned templar.

Anders was my LI, but there were many innocent people in that chantry, and the Grand Cleric was the only sensible leader throughout the whole game. He murdered them all, not even for the sake of the mages like he said (because his actions directly led to their destruction) but solely for his own vengeance. I got the feeling that the only thing he really cared about was war-- not the mages, or the templars, or Hawke. I spent the rest of the game brining people to justice who harmed innocents. I couldn't just let it go. So I had to kill him.

Then I spent the next 20 minutes yelling "GODDAMNIT ANDERS!!!!" while I fought my way to the gallows. It still makes me sad.

I was a little spoiled and knew Anders did something drastic. First I thought he assassinated Petrice. But no, the qunari took care of her. (Stupid b****. I still wish I'd been able to murder her lying ass myself.) Then I figured the next target was Elthina, but I thought poison. Never called Anders planting a BIG F-ING BOMB.

My reaction was less "GODDAMNIT ANDERS" and more "OH MY GOD ANDERS." And I said "OH MY GOD ANDERS" a lot during the game, usually not for good reasons. But Anders has this insatiable fire to him, a will to fight and resist even if it means paying a terrible price. I had to respect that, and my PC certainly did. She loved him and spared his life.

Honestly, I totally get why he did it. Mages have been oppressed for ages. It's time for a little revolution. Of course, he went about it entirely wrong, ENTIRELY WRONG, but I get it, and still am all for the liberation of mages everywhere.

On another point, I wish there was an option to go with Isabela's plan of everyone being free. Then this whole mess could have been prevented.

I haven't reached this part of the game yet though, and I honestly spoiled it for myself, but I am planning on sparing him and running off with him. ApostateHawke and Anders ftw? No? Just me...? xD

I believe, in this, there is no wrong and right. Only what needed to be done. Or do you have an idea of what would have been the "right" path?

And my Apostate!Hawke totally ran off with Anders. She will find a way to give him peace, or die trying!

Actually, I'm kind of confused as to why his actions turn people against the mages in general; it does not, by any means whatsoever change what the Templars have done. It does not erase their brutality. It is what they've done to mages that drives Anders to this eventuality; I'd consider it more fathomable that folks who have already deemed mages too dangerous after to witnessing all the atrocities of blood magic would side with the Templars.

That's the problem, there really is no right way to go about revolution. I was just thinking of the fact that there were innocent people in the Chantry, so that's why I though that he went about it wrong.

The whole ordeal is so morally grey, it's hard to say what's right and what's wrong. :|

Anders deserves peace, finally.

I was really dreading this whole thing because I've heard that the Grand Cleric was sympathetic. Then I got to Act 3, Meredith's actions are becoming more and more tyrannical and all the Grand Cleric, with her power and influence, can say is "The Maker will sort it out."

So killing innocents is not justified, but waiting on the Maker when horrible things are happening is about as useless as useless can be. She knew how bad things were getting and did nothing. From my perspective, if Anders hadn't done what he did, the situation was going to stay horrible and deadlocked and who knows how crazy things could have gotten on their own?

Still, Goddamiit, Anders.

Yeah.  That made me wanna rage.  Waiting for the Maker to solve everything has totally worked out every other time, right?  The Templars carry out their brutality in the name of the Maker, but she says that the Maker will sort it out?  Way to bury your head in the sand and ignore the cries of the people.  As sympathetic as she was... all it took was a word from her to stop Meredith or to expose her corruption, and yet she stood silent.

*glows with vengeance* ffffffff.  This was never going to turn out pretty.  Here's to fighting for a world without that kind of apathy.

I'd really love to pick Jennifer Helper's brain about all this.  It'd be interesting to know what she thought.

    * Flemeth: We stand upon the precipice of change. The world fears the inevitable plummet into the abyss. Watch for that moment...and when it comes, do not hesitate to leap.

    * Flemeth: It is only when you fall that you learn whether or not you can fly.

    * Flemeth: Regret is something I know well. Take care not to cling to it, to hold it so close that it poisons your soul. When the time comes for your regrets, remember me.

    * Flemeth: Tame your destiny, or be claimed by it.

I think that when my MageHawke confronts Anders, she is going to remember what Flemeth said. That raspy voice, more then what it seems, and ages old echoing in the back of her mind as she tries to wrap her head around what her love did. She's going to see this moment as whether to leap or stay.

LOL, kk need more coffee before I attempt to be more poetic.
