Players who obtain the Black Emporium in Dragon Age II will also obtain a mabari war hound. This mabari can be summoned as a fifth party member akin to a Ranger summoning animals.

At first, I took this to mean that I buy the summon item at the Emporium, but I saw a screenshot of a player who had the Mabari outside of Lothering, before Kirkwall.  How do you get the warhound early like that?

You should have a skill to summon him on your hotbar pretty early on. If I recall correctly when he becomes available he summons on his own the first time.

he never summoned on his own for me, he just appeared in my new house.
i didn't even realize until way later that i could summon him, i thought he would be a party member so i never tried the sustained spells for my rogue
