Stroud? What happened to Nathaniel?

I reached the climax of Act 1 where Bethany becomes tainted and I made the decision to bring Anders, which was a painful experience with a Rogue Hawke, Varric, Bethany, Anders set-up on Hard, so that she would become a Grey Warden. I read up a little on what would happen to Bethany and came across a few articles stating that if Nathaniel was conscripted and survived in Awakenings, he would make a cameo and conscript her to save her life.

Now, I'm completely confused here. Some random Warden named Stroud showed up instead of Nathaniel. In Awakenings, Vigil's Keep was fully upgraded. In order to get the most positive ending, I saved Amaranthine and left Vigil's Keep to itself since, as I mentioned, it was fully upgraded. I brought Sigrun, Veleana, and Justice with me and killed The Architect to make sure nobody died and that Veleana didn't disappear mysteriously. The epilogue stated that Vigil's Keep didn't fall and became a trading outpost and that Nathaniel, Anders, and Oghren all survived. Their codex entries, however, said they died. Even in my Witch Hunt save, mousing over Vigil's Keep showed what my Awakenings epilogue stated. For whatever reason, none of my Awakenings characters had codex entries in Witch Hunt so I assumed Bioware had them removed to ensure an "all survived" transfer.

So where is Nathaniel? Is he really dead as the Awakening codex entry states and the epilogue was a lie? Will I have to spend another 15 hours replaying Awakenings and burning Amaranthine to ensure the codex says they all live then another 5 replaying GoA and WH, and then DA2 up to this point again so I get my Nathaniel cameo?

Nate doesn't show up there- that's always Shroud. Nate shows up later in the game.
...but, considering your experience, he may not. It's a side quest, and I believe Nate does have to be alive to be there. Whether he's alive or not in your save, I have no idea. Save's are weird like that.

Nate does have to be alive but even that has its own problems since when I encountered him, he said the Architect lived (and he was with my GW when I killed the bugger so *shrug* that was one plot flag that didn't fire off).
Its entirely possible you can import a pre-ending ending before Vigil's was taken by Darkspawn and he may be alive in that. (or alternately an Origins' ending since the defaults seem to only go up to that far). Nate was with me at the Mother, so I know he lived, I got the he lived slide and his sister turned up in Kirkwall looking for him so that import was fine.
The quest is entirely optional, whoever said you needed him for your surviving sibling either lied or was misinformed. It's Anders who makes the difference then.
I had Carver and left him at home instead of bringing him with me. His fate if left at home is at least better than Bethany's.

Becoming a Drug addicted Lyrium user is much better than being forced into the Circle? lol

I have Bethany and I am going to let her get taken to the Circle to better support why my current Hawke is going against the Templars in this playthrough. +5 for Drama :D

Not saying its MUCH better but yea, at least he CHOOSES to go where he goes. And he's free to walk around the city and do what he wants. Unlike Bethany who is a prisoner in the Circle.
Not saying it's a great fate but I didn't want to take Anders with me since I was playing a healer mage and I didn't want Carver to die.
Admittedly, being a templar IS better than becoming tainted and dying of the blight disease.

My main hawke had carver become a warden and they seemed to bond at the end and truly become brothers (a good comparison would be the brothers Grimm movie) what is it like if he becomes a Templar?

That happened to me, too, and annoyed me to no end. BioWare really needs to get some bug-fixing in the game. It was annoying enough in ME2, when you encountered Conrad Verner again and he always defaulted to the Renegade option, no matter what you really had done before in ME1.

But that wasn't that problematic, because it was just flavour. The decision to kill or not kill the Architect was a huge one and I want it properly represented in my DA2 game. :pinched:
