I love spoilers, people who have gone past this part, how has either option affected your game?

If you follow the rival path she just really made at you for being like the Keeper and not trusting her.
The rival romance scene you can get afterwords is pretty sweet.

I'll give my reasons for that statement when this thread turns into, and it inevitably will, another Merrill bashing/praising debate.

She already has the shard. If you mean the magical carving-knife, does your PC think it's dangerous for her to have? Do they think the eluvian might be dangerous if fixed?Souris wrote...
I'm probably overthinking this, but I'm completely unsure whether I should give her the shard or not.

If yes, is your character the type to stop someone from doing dangerous acts?
On my first playthrough, I* gave it to her because I'd promised to do so and realized how much it meant to her. I trusted Merrill's judgement over the relative safety and utility of the eluvian over that of Merethari. Especially, after the death of Pol.

Go friendship. She isn't dumb when it comes to the Eluvian. Marethari is.

It all depends on how you treat Merrill. If you treat her well, she stays and her story arc continues to its tragic conclusion. She will even marry your character despite your refusal to help her. The Friendship/Rivalry rating is only one of many components that determine the romance and loyalty of your companions. A Friendly companion can leave your character forever. A high Rivalry companion can still fall in love with your character. A major factor is their personal quests. Help them in enough of them and they will stay and a romance is possible even if you do not help in all of them.
As for Merrill specifically I decided that giving her the shard is more suitable if you want to romance her.

Marry your character? Yeah rite, the only mention of marriage in game is about Aveline and when your mother mentions finding you a suitable partner....
Merrill's outfit changes into traditional bridal white and she moves in with you. That is marriage. As with Aveline's marriage, it happens off stage but it clearly happened.
