Hey guys, sorry if there's a dragon age 2 post for this already, but I'm pretty new to these forums (I did find the post on Dragon Age: Origins, however, and that's where I got most of my info). Basically the problem is, I cannot open the dev console on the STEAM edition of Dragon Age II

Here's what I've tried/done:
Ensured -enabledeveloperconsole is typed in Launch options via game properties on STEAM
Tried launching from a desktop shortcut to the exe target: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\SteamApps\\common\\dragon age ii\\bin_ship\\DragonAge2.exe" -enabledeveloperconsole
Made sure my keybindings under docs>bioware>daII>settings has an associated key at OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_Grave (tried many different keys, both written out [ie Grave vs `] including F6) and even uninstalled my Microsoft eHome transwhatever to make sure Grave would work.

I'm running on VISTA 64 BIT. Any information I could supply to aid in this quest I would happily do so.

Also: If you find cheating ruins the game, that's legit. If you post in here just to tell me that, you're a troll. I'd rather be a cheat than a troll :D

QUICK EDIT: When I mean cannot open, I mean that it won't open at all. YES I know I cannot see the console if it is open, I mean I use the appropriate hotkey and I cannot type into any console, all of the other hotkeys continue working and I can open menus. I had no problems like this on the same computer with DA: Origins using the same methods.

Read the Dragon Age 2 wiki. There is a method where you must edit an xml file. That is what you need.

I tried editing the xml file and it did not work... perhaps someone can post theirs on pastbin and I can copy and see if that remedies my woes?

Nine-Nein, did you follow the instructions exactly? Perhaps you added the argument in the "false" section of the xml file. I'm also on steam and went through exactly all the things that the original poster did. Editing the xml file is what finally worked.

Yes. Anyway here are the files.. perhaps you can take a look at them and tell me what I did wrong. Of if your feeling lazy post your own. :)

DragonAge2Launcher.xml (I tried both with the </true> and without)

Actually got someone to post their files elsewhere and I diffed them. Looks like I messed up the indentation which fubared the rest.

In your bin file you have this:
autoquit="true" arguments="-enabledeveloperconsole"></true>
It should be this
autoquit="true" arguments="-enabledeveloperconsole" />
so delete your stuff at the end and ensure after the quotation mark you only have a space, then />

 I am having the same problem, but I believe that I am doing everything right.

my DragonAge2Launcher reads
http://pastebin.com/Ki1i6mqa

My keybindings are
http://pastebin.com/gNq9Xmtp

I open the game from this short cut
"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\dragon age ii\\bin_ship\\DragonAge2.exe" -enabledeveloperconsole

and in my steam lib, the launch options read -enabledeveloperconsole

what am I missing?

In Steam (Thanks to user “Mike for this information!”)

1. Follow the instructions for editing the game XML file, above.
2. Edit the KeyBindings.ini file (described under “Activating the Dev Console,” below)
3. Change the line to OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_F12 (or another hot key)
4. This is strange, but effective — make sure to hit tilde first before hitting the hotkey (or hit the two keys at the same at the same time).

A further note, in addition to editing the xml file, I have the enabledeveloperconsole argument in the personally created da2 shortcut (created by right clicking on the exe and creating the shortcut), and also in steam for good measure too :)

I have also tried all three methods, and I cannot get the console to open at all... After using the KeyBinding method for Tilde, F6 and F12 on separate occasions, I began typing the commands I wanted to use and the shortkeys kicked in instead. Despite that it would be invisible anyway, I am assuming the console is not coming on at all.

The shortcut on my desktop has this target path:
"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age 2\\bin_ship\\DragonAge2.exe" -enabledeveloperconsole

My KeyBindings are currently set to this:
OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_F6
OpenConsole_1=(UNASSIGNED)

And my .xml file line looks like this:
<true action="execute" file="${BINARIES_DIR}\\DragonAge2.exe" path="${BINARIES_DIR}" autoquit="true" arguments=”-enabledeveloperconsole” />

Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

Sirrrus, check your indention... looks like if that is off things get a bit wonky.

Here are some edited files that actually work.

I've had a slightly different problem, my Steam files are in D drive and have been for quite some time since it has moer space. However my DA2 doesn't save to my Biware folders and I've double checked and triple checked for the key bindings file in every folder I have and it's no where to be found. I've tried editing the xml file and the shortcut solution but I find this frustrating. Any thoughts?

Weird problem.. when I open my XML file in notepad, it looks normal (as in in the correct order with the correct identification) but when I open it in IE as an html file, it takes the -enabledeveloperconsole segment and puts it before the True statement

in IE, the file looks like this:
... arguments="-enabledeveloperconsole" autoquit="true"/>

In notepad it looks like this:
... autoquit="true" arguments="-enabledeveloperconsole" />

Any Thoughts?

Yes... Stop opening the xml file up in Internet Explorer. :P

As long as your game is able to run, I would't worry about how IE is displaying the information in the xml file when you just double click to open it.
