Now, now, I know this is an RPG and that so many RPG-fanatics just don't like the idea of people wanting something different in their vanilla experience, but hear me out:

It is not nearly so ridiculous.

First: The distinction between the RPG experience and the Action-Adventure experience have been hazy for a while now. Need I point to dozens of Action-RPGs or even shooters which take RPG statistics? How about Action-Adventure games where you control a party, such as the 2008 Prince of Persia or Beyond Good & Evil? What about Oblivion, which is rather lonely for an RPG? And then what about all the mechanics that RPGs have taken from adventure games over the years, such as collecting items or interacting with the environment? Or how some RPGs--not Action-RPGs--allow jumping, like FFX-2?

All these cross-genre games have actually changed gameplay standards. I walk up to a ladder in DAO and I expect to be able to climb it. But no. I expect to be able to at least enter an area that seems like I should be able to enter... like a 2-inch deep puddle (I'd even say it's expected to be able to swim) or a large gap between trees. But no, some invisible barrier stops me.

These things very easily break our suspension of disbelief. Some argue that if things like jumping, swimming, and climbing were added in via mods, that they would be necessarily clunky and ruin the experience. I would say give it a shot, and if you don' t like it, don't use it. I am more than confident that the modding community is capable of quality and polish.

There is, of course, the disappointing possibility that such mods are impossible. There's AI to consider, among other things.

But let's discuss it. And instead of just mentioning what abilities you want (like climbing) share how you believe they could work or how they could add to the gameplay.

Here's a preliminary list:
-Climbing (ladders, hills too steep to walk/run up)
-Jumping (even contextual--like say you come to a short gap and the team automatically leaps over it)
-Swimming (the game already implies swimming in some parts, like the Werewolf Lair)
-Free-roaming (allowing exploration off the paths)

So, something like a "What Could Lara Do?" philosophy. I'm not asking for Tomb Raider. Rather, the idea that if it seems like going somewhere or doing something is within a character's capabilities, it should be.

While what you want would be cool, I suspect it's not something that we could mod. You'd be needing an engine upgrade.

I understand that technological constraints exist, but what I'm wondering is what actually *is* possible? I would think the free-roaming bit within a single area would be, as well as the animations themselves for the actions. Is it not possible to click on a ladder and have at least a little cutscene of climbing it, and then being at the top?

i think to enable any sort of free roaming from one place to another would require making a LOT of new areas where you transition from one to the other, much like in older zelda games where you walk to the edge of teh screen and it goes to the next area. Interesting idea though, would definetly love to see something like this
