Yeah, while I have to say I understand that games are going to have glitches and it's games that can be patched can be listed without being 100% ultimately polished....but....this is a severe, visually evident bug.

It's not some small minor quest bug, like the bandit leader I have standing around in Wounded Coast doing nothing, this is a you cannot play your game because your save-state is permanently screwed problem if you don't go in and manually edit your save. For the most part the game is pretty polished aside from some minor things.

I've beta tested a ton of MMOs and trust me, this isn't beta, but, this is a pretty hard bug to excuse. However, this was not a particularly hard bug to find. This forum was less active than many beta forums on lesser bugs as far as input was concerned and it was still pinned down pretty quickly. Hard to imagine how they missed this one.

speaking from the developer's point of view, there's a million and one way to miss a bug.
it's so easy to talk about how highly visible a bug is when you have fresh eyes who have never seen a line of code :)
as we all know, this bug only happens to us after like 15-20 hours of gameplay and if the right circumstances apply. it's very understandable to see how this can be missed to me. especially because you have to die ten times + revive for it to become "visually evident".

uebelblatt - yes it is really hard to miss this one, if you don't actually play the game.

All it took was to check if the buffs stay and are properly acknowledged by the game if you switch in and out characters. Don't tell me people don't finish their game with every possible ending//quest//character relation etc to check it, cause that is just stupid.

Like I said sh*t happens, just that it's not fixed yet.

Edit - my char didn't die a single time, I said here already that the buff from companions is bugged, both sebastians and isabelas and it makes no difference if it happens 20 hours into the game, 2 hours or 2 million.

As far as I heard there are those people called "Beta Testers". They are somewhat like Gray Wardens of game developement - it's their task to spot darkspawn... err, glitches and bugs wherever they appear. And they are entirely different caste than programmers who have to deal with their reports. And those beta testers are paid for playing through incomplete game time and time again, multiple times untill there are no major bugs anymore.

Or so the legends say.

Honestly, it it kinda strange that a glaring issue like this slipped through beta testing. However there is no sense in crying over spilled milk, it happened, the bug is there and victim is dead with jugular torn out. What CAN and SHOULD be done is finding the cause of it in the code and fixing it ASAP.

And yes I can imagine that it's gruelling to do that and it requires a technical and programming knowlege far beyond my meager understanding of computers, et caetera but it's part of the job and somewhat of moral obligation of the author to deliver product that has no glaring flaws and/or repari those flaws (if there are any) in possibly quick manner.

I need a fix for this soon, It has gotten worse and worse for me, and now it is so bad my main character just freezes when he tries to enter combat.

All other characters seem to work fine. Only Hawke is slowed. This is regardless of wich character I have targeted/control over.

For me this started soon after act 3 began. Yes I played for a bit with Isabella's friendship buff. Don't know if it's worth mentioning, but both my Dex and Cunning is over 50.

the buff not being applied correctly is one thing. that I can see as hard to miss. but the slow-down is something that happens gradually over time. I had this "debuff" on me for 10 hours of gameplay until it became unplayable.
at first I even suspected heavier armor to slow me down ;)
Even with beta testers, this one is not as evident as you think imho. But maybe we shouldn't get off track here.
Could anyone else apply the -speed% to anything else than death + revive?

and what about the damage resitance reduction? that one I still haven't figured out.

one more thing I noticed about sebastian. is it just me, or does his defense stay at 5% no matter how much cunning you give him? is that another side effect of the bug?

@ malocus, are you friends with sebastian? if so, what is your current flat damage resistance (no auras, naked)?

I found a more permanat fix to the problem.
Using the Dragon Age Save game editor (daosavegame.exe)
Look for the Fire Damage Reistance value. It has an ID of 42. Seems Bioware changed the id values for stats and 42 is now Attack speed.
Youll notice that under modifier it has a negative value. Simply change that to 0 and save. And presto, Hawke has normal attack speed again.
Aint i just awesome. took me all 10 min to find and figure out how to fix..

Thank you very much, that really solved the problem.:wizard:
( mine changed to -55.0)

As has been said, that is only a temporary fix and the bug will happen again.

It will be fixed briefly but the stacking loss in speed will start to build up.

Well they're aware of it and it probably won't be hard to fix given the nature of the bug. It should definitely be fixed in the first patch. I just hope they manage to fix everything, attack speed, damage res, etc. There's also a lot of quests that need fixing and a slew of install errors some people are getting. Just hang on and keep using the save editor.

Problem with the patch taking time is that any patch will need some basic testing before they roll it out. Plus they not only have to find the bug and fix it. they also need to write up code to correct it for people that already have negative value.
The companion friendship and item set bugs should be easy enough for Bioware to find and correct. But the other one that screws up attack speed will be a lil bit trickier to locate i bet.
So dont expect em to rush out a patch. As doing so just risks introducing new bugs that screw up the game even more.

For now my best tip is to simply quick save everytime you add or remove Sebastian or Isabella from Party (asuming your fully befriended with either) And double check the save in save editor if they **** up the stats. And then correct it.
The problem only seems to happen when you switch them out. Looks like its mostly a problem with how the script doesnt trigger to remove their shared ability properly when you remove them.

Tried the fix mentioned above but after setting the Fire Resistance to 0 the game refuses to load the game, saying I am missing the DLC(the DLC names are in polish which is weird), even though I have them.

Ive noticed some people saying that this bug was merely affecting the graphics of the character and hawke was dealing damage normally but on my game its ALSO affect combat; damage is only showing when hawkes sword finally connects and the damage numbers also only show up when he finally hits the enemy.

that being said has anyone discovered a fix for this bug yet?

I had the same problem , just download version 0.5.1 and it'll work fine .

Doubt it will fix your save if its already been broken.
But the new version wont break it atleast.
Hope you made a backup of your save before you edited it

Unfortunately no , just that i couldn't change the fire resistance with the save game editor(0.4.9) , it wouldn't load cause it said i didnt have the DLC's installed , but i can do it with 0.5.1.

fortunately i havent tried messing with the editor cause im too worried ill break it, ive been getting around the problem by playing as one of the party members but the fact that hawke is completely usless (might get 1 hit off in a fight) makes the harder fights alot more difficult, rather annoying really we didnt have this bad of bugs in awakening : ( im probably gonna go back to dao and finish the playthrough since i wasnt able to transfer the old playthroughs to my new computer

Messing with movement speed in the editor is perfectly safe. Just open the save, go to line 42, change to 0. Ta-da, game is playable again.

Just make sure that in your save you don't have any speed buffs active.

It's easy enough to judge for each one though, my Hawke has two 5% buffs active so I change the value to 10.0 or 15.0 if Isabela is in the group, unfortunately it's only a matter of time before I notice the slowdown again and have to re-edit.

Gonna give the game a rest till this bug is squished, it's work around-able sure (for us PC users, I feel sorry for the console users experiencing it) but annoying as all hell to keep having to tweak the game on the fly.

Just to throw my 2 cents in on this.

After stumbling across this, I decided to check my save games as well. Pretty much to re-summarize, it is tied to friendly buff status from Isabella and Sebastian.

I wondered what the hubbub was since I am half way through act 2 and have not noticed anything, so I pulled up my stats, (did not see ID 42 attack speed animation) and both Sebastian and Isabella are at 35 friend rating.

I've used haste multiple times, and I am unsure if my Hawke has died. I reload frequently since I can't seem to make money and kits/potions are expensive.

So in summary.

My mage is clean, no decay on speed or dmg buff, Isabella and Sebastian are at 35 friend rating (and rarely used)

Hope this helps clarify things for patches!

This.

I haven't beaten it yet, so I'll just need to avoid spoilers until a patch is released.

I figured out a work-around.
First, unequip your gear and cancel all buffs. Now cast haste.
Make a save and grab that file : http://social.biowar...ect/1936/#files
Than open it and go to SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHARAKTER / SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHARAKTER_CHAR / SAVEGAME_EFFECT_LIST. Now pick the second effect and increase the duration to the highest number possible.
This will now let you have infinte hast, which seems to counter this weird slowdown.
Hope that helps.

This works very well.

However remember that the SAVEGAME_EFFECT_LIST ID is not universal for everyone. For me it was number 6, with the ID value 228250. It should be easy to figure out which one is yours; just look for the one that has a duration of 20000 (if haste is upgraded, probably 10000 if not), and change it. Changing SAVEGAME_EFFECT_DURATIONTYPE to 4 also makes the buff not disappear when you visit Hawke's home.

Also, I read from the Moderator in another thread in the Xbox360 forum (probably been stated here aswell) that this bug is from Isabella's friendly +5% attack speed bonus getting "removed" over and over causing a -5% attack speed debuff that stacks and gets worse over time. So if you're playing through the game again, don't become friendly with Isabella until the issue is resolved

Only slightly on the friendly side of neutral as I've tried pushing him into retaking his lands lately. Naked my damage resistance is 0%
