I read so many threads wherein people stated that the Reaver specialization was a waste of time. I've found it to be quite useful and not the gimp it was made out to be. From where I sit, that specialization, along with Champion made me more of a DPS Arcane Warrior than the traditional method. Using armor and accessories that restore health, helps mitigate the health loss incurred by using the disciplines. (I very rarely need to use Health Poltices.) Devour helps replace what's left and the damage produced from the Warrior disciplines makes you absolutely devastating. I agree that the buffs for a "traditional" Arcane Warrior makes you pretty much invincible, but from a different (offensive) perspective, being a Two-Handed Champion/Reaver has made me equally so. Not only do I not have to put my weapon away in order to use disciplines like Frightening Appearance, Aura of Pain (including the Power of Blood Disciplines - Blood Thirst and Blood Fury)... I am more resilient as a Warrior and more adept with my weapons.

On a side note, because I didn't want to corrupt the ashes in order to get the specialization, I went ahead and played Awakening first and bought the manual.

Just keep a save from before you meet Kolgrim. Do as he says and defile the ashes to unlock the spec. Then revert to the save game and voila: Reaver is unlocked and you still get to be a well-behaved, faithfull chantry worshipper.

*nods* Yes... I realized later that I could do this. Still, be ye not mislead... I am not faithful to the Chantry. ;^)

What difficulty are you on that you see a 2h reaver as being as effective as an AW? Maybe reaver isn't as terrible as most people think, but I highly doubt you have made an invincible reaver. Unless you are in awakening and are also a spirit warrior with 100% dodge chance and 100% spell resist then I guess I could see it. But on second thought you are a 2h warrior so you will have to use some bad peice of equipment somewhere (I consider the knight commander armor to be less than ideal for this set up) to get to 100% 100%. I guess you could use the knight commander armor then get the dodge chance for 2 hand vigilance. still seems bad

I'm playing on Hard mode and not in Awakening. Having said this, I need to clarify my perspective on "invincible". I wasn't saying that the Champion/Reaver is invincible in the sense that he can't be damaged. I mean it in the sense of him being able to dish out a large amount of damage and therefore doesn't give the enemy enough of a chance to damage him. Right now, I'm at level 20 and I've focused on Strength and Dexterity (both at 40). Likewise, I have the Two-Hand tier maxed out, so when I hit an enemy, they get and stay hit. I've noticed as well that I don't have to use Mighty Blow or Critical Strike that much because I'm dishing out enough damage and stunning opponents with the Warrior passive ability Stunning Blows. When going into combat, Indomitable and Powerful Swings are already active, so I turn on Aura of Pain and Rally (if it isn't already on) and I get cracking. I also don't stand still and trade blows with the enemy, I hit and move, knowing that Aura of Pain is still doing damage. So again, "invincible" in this case is a matter of perspective, but in this sense I dare say that this build has made me "more" effective than an Arcane Warrior. How so? My natural resilience (along with some abilities) keeps me in the fight longer where I can stun an enemy and let my companion finish them off and I'm doing indirect non-Friendly Fire AoE damage to any enemies around me plus drawing aggro. From where I sit, an Arcane Warrior is self-sustaining and thus hard to kill, but not much else *unless* they're packing heaps of mana. Put simply, as I hit first, hard and continuously, my opponent isn't going to have much of an opportunity to damage me and with abilities like Devour and Death Blow (and the occasional Health Poltice and Deep Mushroom for stamina), my guy stays in fighting condition. Lastly, I have to empahsize that (in my experience) the Warrior's natural resilience far outweighs that of a Mage... Plate Armor notwithstanding and Arcane Warrior or not. Also, damaging a Reaver just makes him/her that much more dangerous. ;^)

On another note, I can't speak highly enough about the Two-Hand Sweep and War Cry abilities for close combat crowd control.  There have been times when my mage companion was getting swarmed and my character dished out a War Cry and Two-Hand sweep to give her the time to recover. In the case of Wynne (who had Cleansing Aura activated), I was in no danger at all... Consequently, neither was she. As for Morrigan, she usually hits the group with Blood Wound and only needs me for a Blood Sacrifice or that stubborn enemy who resists. ;^)
