On a side note, because I didn't want to corrupt the ashes in order to get the specialization, I went ahead and played Awakening first and bought the manual.

Just keep a save from before you meet Kolgrim. Do as he says and defile the ashes to unlock the spec. Then revert to the save game and voila: Reaver is unlocked and you still get to be a well-behaved, faithfull chantry worshipper.

I read so many threads wherein people stated that the Reaver specialization was a waste of time. I've found it to be quite useful and not the gimp it was made out to be. From where I sit, that specialization, along with Champion made me more of a DPS Arcane Warrior than the traditional method. Using armor and accessories that restore health, helps mitigate the health loss incurred by using the disciplines. (I very rarely need to use Health Poltices.) Devour helps replace what's left and the damage produced from the Warrior disciplines makes you absolutely devastating. I agree that the buffs for a "traditional" Arcane Warrior makes you pretty much invincible, but from a different (offensive) perspective, being a Two-Handed Champion/Reaver has made me equally so. Not only do I not have to put my weapon away in order to use disciplines like Frightening Appearance, Aura of Pain (including the Power of Blood Disciplines - Blood Thirst and Blood Fury)... I am more resilient as a Warrior and more adept with my weapons.

What difficulty are you on that you see a 2h reaver as being as effective as an AW? Maybe reaver isn't as terrible as most people think, but I highly doubt you have made an invincible reaver. Unless you are in awakening and are also a spirit warrior with 100% dodge chance and 100% spell resist then I guess I could see it. But on second thought you are a 2h warrior so you will have to use some bad peice of equipment somewhere (I consider the knight commander armor to be less than ideal for this set up) to get to 100% 100%. I guess you could use the knight commander armor then get the dodge chance for 2 hand vigilance. still seems bad
