So let's talk about this event in the game. What was your reaction to this? Did this change who you sided with? Where you upset? Did you kill Anders?

Lets discuss one of the games biggest twist.

I was going to kill him, but my love interest Merril suggested I bring him along and make him work off what he just did instead of just ending him. So... I had to go with what she said. I was a jerk to everyone except her. Rofl.

easily the most jaw dropping moment in the last couple years of gaming for me. when i helped him with that quest i knew it was something bad, but that was crazy, way more than i expected. Anders is CRAZY lol.

i told him to run off, but then he came back and i accepted his help for the final battle cus i figured "well im already killing templars by the dozen why not have mister mage terrorist with me"

Anders wanted to see his people freed from slavery. Although I was extremely surprised when it happened (especially since the first time I didn't complete his quest and didn't realize the seventh year was coming to a close when I answered Orsino's letter), I understand his motivations since my Hawke was also a mage, and I kept him around while Sebastian threatened to declare a war and stormed off.

I sympathised with him, but what he did was no better than the whole situation, I loved his character. But he prob knew what he was doing the entire time and didnt trust my Hawke at all to tell her. It was a lot of seperate events that led to this point but what he did was the trigger.

He played me like a fiddle in my first play through, jerk. Made me collect matierials and distract the poor old woman and black mailed me with his affections without telling me anything... And for what? blood in the streets?

I was upset that he killed innocents and basically started a war, but I was in a romance with him and had grown quite fond of him in my first playthrough, so I didn't kill him, I just told him to leave. He came back in the final battle anyway though.

It was the most...Idk how to describe. It just made me feel...dreamy. It's my favorite video game moment by far. Anyway, I didn't kill him at first, but since I sided with the templars, I had to in the Templar Hall. I'm never siding with them again in any other playthrough. This plot...It was superior to Origins because of that moment. Anders surpassed any other character instantly. Great job, BioWare.

I killed him. Never liked Anders. What he did was wrong.

My jaw dropped, and I think I said "you idiot" out loud. At that point I disliked both groups, both where behaving like children in my book. I was going to side with the mages simply for my sisters sake, but that almost changed my mind.

If a "good" mage can justify that, I'd hate to see what one of those (to use the words of Anders) evil demon summoning blood mages are capable of.

I killed that terrorist, but I was a friend with him so it did kind of suck. What a d*ck that guy turned out to be.

His act of terrorism was "dreamy"? What?

I didn't mean that dreamy. I meant I thought it was cool...and crazy. Anyway, I liked his "You're either here, or you're there." resolution. And I highly doubt it's any of your concern what I thought about it.

I know exactly what you mean. This moment of "... what?" And then just this fog settles on.

Between Anders's 9/11 moment and Leandra's horrific end, this game GOT to me in a way that none other ever has. Even if I didn't love almost everything else about it ... those two things would have made me forgive it.

Best writing I've seen in a game.

I'm certain many mages would view him as a freedom fighter who lead to their independence, if Hawke sides with the Kirkwall Circle. When given the choice between freedom and subjugation, Anders saw no reason to choose the latter and forced the issue of the former. Knight-Commander Meredith wants to murder every man, woman, and child who is a mage in Kirkwall, and it's this type of oppressive system that Anders wants to defeat. He wants to see mages attain their independence. Anders targetted a building filled with people who were members of an organization that enslaved mages for almost 900 years. The Order of Templars are soldiers who serve the Chantry, after all, and the focus was to force the issue of mages rising up to free themselves from subjugation. First Enchanter Orsino had no intention of doing anything to emancipate the mages, and Anders did.

When I saw that I literally gasped out loud and said, "WTF just happened?!?"

It was impressive, I might add. Even if he is a little crazy - I couldnt bear the thought of executing him or making him leave. She loved him regardless, we fought together for the mages and ran off. Fugitives together in the end. Awwww... =P

I must say I totally didnt expect that. What a twist......
[although I wish we could have helped and partake in his attempt to exorcise himself.....that would have been interesting...]

I was a bow rogue and killed him to see if I could make it through without a healer. Actually wasn't very hard with some well placed crowd control.

Personally, my favorite part of the whole thing was Sebastian crying on the ground like a little girl. If I didn't have the Signature Edition I'd be angry I paid money for a character so pathetic. I do, however, take great pleasure in tormenting him. Not quite as satisfying as using Cow Kill on Anomen, but it's up there.

He used you to distract the chantry lady, he wasen't trying to get justice out. He lied and manipulated your feelings for him so he could kill everyone in the church.

...What?! He is watching his people being oppressed! He knew they would just run to the Grand Cleric, and she would tell them to calm down, or, as he said, to compromise. And there were no compromises. That's is why he destroyed the Grand Cleric. They had to settle it, one way or the other.

An intolerant religious group that terrorizes, tortures, rapes, and kills people? Are you saying the Chantry of Andraste and the Order of Templars are...?

Agreed.  After I finished that quest I was expecting something to happen along those lines.  And I was getting really concerned how Anders was really upset/worried about something and telling me I may/may not like I was see in the end.  Or that I was "too good" for him.  I shrugged it off, but I was blown away at the end.  Then to follow it up with one of the hardest decisions I can remember making in a game.

I stuck with him in the end, but personally I could still not justify what he did.  But I don't think doing that to the Revered Mother in general was what he should of done.  The problem was the templars not that specific building/Chantry section. >.> I know he was trying to prove a point, but I think he was pointing it in the wrong direction.  Templars/Chantry may be of the same entity, but the Mother even says she'd never pick sides in that situation, so I would say if anything the chantry was a neutral party in this.

I'd spent the game in a romance arc with him, fighting as a mage for the rights of mages, and when I saw what he did, it really knocked the wind out of me. Sure, the Grand Cleric was never going to interfere. But did she have to die? It made me rather uncomfortable. At the same point, it was obvious Anders was uncomfortable too. Does that justify it? No. But his possession and his obsession might explain it.

This and the All That Remains quest were easily the most emotional points in any game I've ever played. I was truly disturbed by Anders actions, and also a little disturbed that I didn't want to kill him right there for it. I think in this day and age, terrorism of any sort is hot button. It can definitely be uncomfortable to see an act like that portrayed with some measure of sympathy. So kudos to the BioWare team for handling this issue with all the gray morality and nuanced motivations it deserves. I really almost switched my allegiance to the templars, but in the end I couldn't turn my back on Anders.
