So I am nearing the end of Act 2, well at least I think I am. I just did the companion / side quests for Merril and the elves to kill the Varterral and what-not.

What did you do at the end when the Keeper gives Hawke that tool (forgot the elven name...), did you give it to her or agree with the Keeper?

I gave it to her; I wanted to see what would happen with the mirror.

Gave it to her, but now I am at a crossroads in Act III

 Kept it from her, not that it seemed to make much of a difference. She apparently still worked on the mirror anyway, because afterwards I still got the questline to help her complete it.

I kept it from her. During act 3, after she became a rival, she smashed the mirror saying she had been wrong to try to use it. But, right after that cutscene was over I talked to her again and she gave me the quest to go converse with the demon so she can get the mirror to work...

Yeah, she seems sort of bugged.

I got the cutscene with her talking about the outcome of her companion quest in act three before I'd even done the quest. It was kind of an annoying spoiler...

Actually I believe Bioware said you can still do companion quests (and even romances) with Rivals.

Though I'm not sure Merrill qualifies as someone you can rival romance (rivalmance?). Haven't confirmed, though.

You can Rival-mance her.

Yeah, it got bloody fast on mine.
