So this Ser Varnell fight...

I keep dieing.
I am playing on normal, and the game has been a breeze in all fights and boss fights up until this point. I wanted to play on normal my first playthrough, and will bump it up to hard next, and then nightmare after that.

Anyways, this fight for some reason is very hard.

My companions are: Varric, Anders, Isabela, and I am a 2h warrior with some tanky attributes/abilities but mainly DPS

How did you guys beat it? I'm stuck.

Wow don't reply all at once or anything....

On my 10th trial, I'm about to pull my hair out this fight is pissing me off so much. There are so many waves of Fanatics it's literally like 40 on screen at once; plus the boss.

3 seconds and my whole party is dead. Nice.

*edit* Jesus christ is nobody on these boards?

i know how you feel. I wish I could help but sadly I am in the same boat as you. I have Sebastian, Anders, and Fenris. I am a rogue. So I have a warrior, a healer, a melee and a ranged. What the heck is wrong with this set up. I HATES THEM

For the love of god I've been doing this fight over and over and over and over the past 45 minutes. This thread is flying down the boards quickly so surely there are people replying; why is this thread being avoided like the plague? I can't beat this fight. I'm about to use cheats since it's so broken.

Sorry about all the bumps but I'm so pissed right now at this fight and that nobody is replying.

The problem with this fight is you have the enemy mobs spawning from both sides. Here's how I beat Varrel:

As soon as the fight starts, run back in the direction that you came (near the trapped chest). This does 2 things. A) it puts you behind the spawn point, meaning only the enemies initially on the field and Varrel will appear and attack you, and B) it funnels the enemy which is great for AoE spells. Just use your tank to block the corridor and protect your casters. Don't forget to put your team on hold (it means micromanaging them, but its better than them running off).

Once that group is dead, slowly move to where the fight starts. Enemies will then spawn in, but should be far easier to deal with.

I actually did win once but the game froze =\\ But if you take control of your healer (I have Anders decked out pretty well as a healer) and just use AOEs as much as possible, the smaller less dangerous enemies die fairly quickly. But at some point you need to just focus on Varnell. I dont think the waves stop until he is dead. I could be wrong. It was so many attempts ago that I don't even remember... you need a character that can get their attention and hold it as much as possible. thats really all I can tell you

The problem may be that I don't have a dedicated tank in my party

WOOOOOT! I JUST beat it. Ok so what i did was... I ran all the way back to the steps. I placed my healer and ranged about 6 steps from the bottom of the stairs. I placed my 'tank' at the center along with my melee. it was pretty easy then. I think I only got one to maaaaybe 3 waves

by tank I mean someone that can taunt or has a little higher threat. If you are the tankiest then you should be ok i think

Ya, you don't need a tank per say, but it helps. The reason I recommend having one is because they keep the enemy tied down (so they don't run out of the spell's range.

@meny2122. Glad you were able to beat it.

Telling ya, 2 mages with firestorm going off, you'll be done the fight in like 15 seconds.

This fight is ****ing stupid. Me(archer), varric, aveline, anders. Firestorm + (2)Hail of Arrows doesn't do **** on hard mode.

This fight is ridiculous. I actually managed to pull Varnell away from the main area with only Fenris alive and solo'd him. Took quite a while but he went down. However, when I came back upstairs I had to still kill off the minions. Well whaddya know even with Varnell dead another wave of them spawned. Got overwhelmed and died. Unfortunately I can't change my party make-up because my only save is right before this fight. I have Fenris, myself (rogue), Isabela, and Anders. I'm so tired of hearing throw mages at it when encountering a difficult fight. I got told the same thing in DA1. I shouldn't have to have a party full of mages to take down a boss.

Pretty much impossible on hard unless you run back to the steps as others have stated. It is much easier dealing with the waves of mobs in one choke point rather than get surrounded in the middle of the room.

Wow, happy to know I wasn't alone on this. You basically have to get some massive AoE spam, and with 2 mages throwing AoE left and right it almost feels unfair; but there is just simply no other way >.>

This  is exactly what I did.  Not sure about fire storm.  That probly works too.

When you think about what you are going up against, 2 rogues is not a good idea.  I killed it eventually with merrill(SP), anders, aveline and me as rogue.

The fight is still stupid and should be fixed.

I pulled them around the corner, I moved everyone around that corner you came into the room with the split in it.

Once you do this, you can keep your meaty folks up front, just pummel away, took me 3 times, to figure out best route for that.

The enemy spawning thing is a huge flaw in DA2(and also not really realistic).
It's like they ran out of ideas for DA2's fighting mechanics and thought that enemis popping up at every corner would add to the challenge. Well, they were wrong.

I just died once in this fight, because i had no idea there was an endless horde coming for me, i tried killing some of them then focusing on Varnell, only to notice that each time i went for the adds, he healed himself. The second time i just focused on Varnell, only killing the adds that attacked my mages, i had Merrill, Anders as healer, Aveline as tank and i was a 2h Warrior.

I wonder how is it on Nightmare? hmmm.

This is the hardest fight - I can not beat it at all...all my party members die and Anders just stands there taking it (wtf?) and it's so fast I hardly have time to think....can't change your party because there is no place to do that once you are in the area and you can't leave either.....brutal....
