@Zorph, why don't you stop ****ing and use your brain. Seriously, do you think this forum is live chat? Give it some time instead of after each time you FAIL to get an answer. I know your mom jumps everytime you cry but we all dont.

And to all you other ppl playing this awesome game, whether your playing a tank class or ESPECIALLY a squishy class use this one rule when in fights....CHOKE POINT, don't get your self surrounded, fall back to an ally or hallway.

It's depressing that these trash bosses with a couple of assassin give me more trouble than the final fight with Meredith. I beat Meredith on my first attempt but was stuck are Ser Varnell for over an hour and was pulling out my hair venting my rage verbally,"WHAT KIND OF SH*T IS THIS!"

I was able to beat Varnell fairly quickly.

As a spirit/force mage, I made a point of keeping the side mobs under control with Varric while I let Aveline and Fenris beat the ****** out of Varnell. I didn't have spirit mage activated until the end, to do a quick heal, so there was a lot of cone of cold and fist of the maker going on.

It's really down to knocking the side mobs off quickly, or at least keeping them off of the party members that can face down Varnell. I think at tossed a maxed out walking bomb and crushing prison at him whenever the cd popped as well, then went back to killing side adds.

So this Ser Varnell fight...

I keep dieing.
I am playing on normal, and the game has been a breeze in all fights and boss fights up until this point. I wanted to play on normal my first playthrough, and will bump it up to hard next, and then nightmare after that.

Anyways, this fight for some reason is very hard.

My companions are: Varric, Anders, Isabela, and I am a 2h warrior with some tanky attributes/abilities but mainly DPS

How did you guys beat it? I'm stuck.

Firestorm and Cone of cold with Anders.
Hail of Arrows with Varric.
Your PC should take out as many as possible with abilities like Scythe and Whirlwind.
And Isabela runs around in stealth and backstabs people.

Take out everyone else before you attack Varnell himself.

I normally play a mage, and as a Mage , I havn't had trouble with this fight once. I havn't even had a companion die. Force Mage spec is a wonder for this fight. Pull them into one spot with Abyss, Knock them down with Fist, Have me and Merrill cast Chain Reaction and vualla. first wave dead. My companions were Fenris Isabella and Merrill. Oh, and we were all like, lv 24 ^ ^"

I read somewhere that you have the option to not fight ser varnell and this will save sister Petrice in the end, can anyone confirm this?

If you choose not to fight Varnell, the Qunariy break free and attack the crowd and you fight them instead. Saving Petrice actually happens later when the viscount's son goes to the Chantry and you find him dead. You have the option of ratting Petrice out to the Grand Cleric or not. Ratting Petrice out will get you the ending where a Qunari assassin puts two into her, whilst lying to the old lady will prompt the the Qunari to attack instead.

Will Petrice die anyway? :( I'm trying to save her.

I just done this and boy was it frustrating. It seems that the best tactic is to move your party back out of the main room and at the bottom of the stairs. Then just hold your party and spam aoe skills at the fanatics. Then when Varnell comes it should be much easier.

This (and MOST other mob fights) are VERY hard if you do them wrong, and VERY easy if you do them right. Here's how I beat this and every other tough fight, playing the game on Hard.

1. Find a choke point.
2. Put everyone who isn't a tank behind said choke point.
3. Put tank in choke point.
4. Hit HOLD POSITION.
5. Fight like that.
6. Profit.

This will work on literally EVERY fight that doesn't have a mage who can do the AOE of death on you. For those fights, you need to burn said mage down fast (Archer's Lance is great for this), then do the tactic above. Also... sometimes you need to just run around with only Varric when everyone else is dead, shooting fools until you win (which is how I beat a couple tougher fights like the High Dragon).

I did the fight on hard with a SnS Hawke,Isabella, Merril, and Fenris. I just went to town with AoE powers. Actually, I started the fight by having all four characters lob combustion grenades. Disorient and slow with Fatiguing Fog let me use Dispersal for CCC. Fenris was doing his Scything stuff. All Hands on Deck with the stun option works great here, too. Chain Lightning and Wrath of the Ehlven with the healing function kept Merril the blood mage rocking and rolling.

I don't have much of a problem with this fight, oddly enough. I play mage with Anders, Aveline, and Seb in my party at this point. Anders, myself and Seb hug the corner of the room with a wide view of the battlefield. Aveline tanks somewhere in the center. Pull of the Void draws the entire mob to one spot. Glyph of Paralysis from Anders holds them there. Chain Lightning + Tempest + Firestorm + Hail of Arrows takes down everyone but Varnell who gets Winter's Grasp and Crushing Prison in alternating rotations. Anyone who gets too close gets Miasmic Flask from Seb, Mind Blasted from Anders or Hawke, or Cone of Cold from the mages. Works great and the fight ends in about a minute.

Hmm. Focus on killing off the underlings. Have your entire party focus on single enemies. Use area of effect abilities to your greatest advantage. Heal, heal, heal.

I went in with mostly rogues and no mages (RogueHawke, Isabela, Sebastian and Aveline) and didn't have too much trouble. Aveline kept most things gathered together, Isabela and Seb did aoe attacks, and I (duelist) took out Varnell.

But don't be afraid to cheat. You get consumables. Use them. Fire Grenades can take out herds of those fanatics that love bunching together. And Poisons speed things along nicely.

I did have a little trouble keeping Sebastian up because he was drawing aoe aggro. Until I remembered to put his decoy out. That bought Aveline enough time to get things back under control.

Me too Cutlass, I was unfortunate enough to get stuck with my S&S Hawk, Isabela, Sebastion, & Varric. After about 20 attempts I finally won. Had Varric & Sebastian use Hail of Arrows mixed with some Confusion & Masmic Flask. Anders has been with me ever since.

The key is catching the mobs when they spawn and aoeing them to death before they can swarm your party. Keeping Varnell CC'd or dispelled is key as well.

Upgraded rogue fogs (Chaos, Fatiguing Fog, Miasma) are awesome in huge mob fights like this.

Fight in darktown where the templar have a bunch of Qunari tied up and murderknifing them. Sister Petrice tells you to go there.

I just beat this on my first try on hard mode. I had myself (rogue, archer), Merril, Anders and Fenris. I ran back to the stairs, set up Fenris to tank near the top of the stairs, careful that he uses the wall to stay out of the archers shot range. Unloaded on all mobs who came in view, used Petrify on Varnell and saved him for last. Ran back and finished off all the spawning mobs in the main area.

You get to fight Ser Varnell?

In my playthrough, I was torturing the captive Qunari with him, then they suddenly broke free, and he helped me fend them off.

I found it pretty easy controlling Fenris and letting Anders, DW Hawke and Varric run on tactics. Vanguard Fenris cuts through hordes of trash mobs very effectively, I find.
