If it is then yeah that fight is really hard, it was one of the very few fights where only one character was still standing at the finish of the fight, I ran out of the room to let my health regen and had to take on two or three enemies that were chasing me.

No, that's Ser Otto.
Ser Varnell is the templar who was torturing qunari, and u have to defend him against the qunari when they break free.

Strangely enough that fight is also pretty hard and I lost that one heaps, anyway OP it's good you have heaps of crowd control spells to stop all the weakling enemies, and have a good tank or two that can attract attention. I also use Isabela a bit and used a bunch of debilitating abilities against Ser Varnell, do heaps of damage to him, evade him then keep slicing him up etc.
Well I suppose Bioware at least hasn't taken the difficulty out of the game at least...

This is indeed a VERY VERY VERY annoying fight.
Varnell seems to have a 100% resistance to physical damage...
Whyyyy, he's far too overpowered for a boss to take on at level 14-18. Templar magic resistance is enough for him, as well as his damn auras and grenades.
My beserker can bring down the crowds quickly... but with varnell, as soon as my mages are down, im screwed... the DR means it takes ages to take him to even half HP, and then he just uses health potion... on what seems like an unlimited supply.
Varnell is Petrice's bodyguard involved in the qunari business, who
brings with him a metric **** ton of fanatic commoners with bows and
mauls. No assassins, though, as I recall. Just a commander with a metric
**** ton of trash mobs. Perfect fodder for a 2hander.
If bioware adds in assassins to that fight in later patches.. i will have to kill someone.
BIG SPOILER:
you can fight the qunari instead (i think) if you have an aggressive hawke

This one was also really hard, but with Merril, Anders, Me (Rogue DW Assassin) and Aveline as Tank, I was able to do it. Merril has great aoe with Cone of Cold and Chain Lightning (Also Tempest), but the hard part was mitigating damage. I retreated slowly to the back area with the trapped chest, and used glyph of paralysis/repulsion as much as possible.

If falling back feels cheesy to you I recommend ignoring varnell entirely and just setting your team up to bring down the mobs as soon as they spawn in. If you have anyone tanky you should run around pulling mobs off your mages and rogues and then keep varnell distracted if the rest are under control. Just keep at it until the fanatics are all dead then you should have no problems bringing varnell down as a group.

After years of WarCraft this was instinctually my strategy and I've never gone down in this fight.
edit: Ox really has the right idea too. Falling back and bottlenecking mobs is a great strategy for big crowds.

I had trouble with that fight myself, I put it to easy mode and it ended up with just me and Isabela left and I sort of just ran around, attacked then kept running around

1) Mage Hawke
2) Aveline
3) Isabela
4) Varric
That fight is all about timing and bringing your party to a place, where you can't be attacked from all sides. First put everybody on hold and use cone of cold on the starting mob, followed by archers lance from Varric, repeat with winters grasp and bursting arrow. That should decimate this mob quite nicely, you can follow up with a shield bash and chain lightning, to decimate the enemies some more. After that its time to run, best track back till the narrow corridor and once the enemies follow you, block the path with gravitic ring. Bombard them with every AOE attack, repeat, until everything is dead.
You always need a combination of crowd control spell/skill and AOE spell/skill for those mob fights. Things that work nicely are: gravitic ring, pull of the abyss, glyph of paralysis, fatiguing fog in combination with firestorm, tempest, hemorrhage and hail of arrows. And of course a lot of CCCs. Always bring a tank that can take the main assault and a rogue to start CCCs and to hit real hard on single targets like mages, assassins. 2 handed warriors are not very useful in my opinion, but if you bring one, make sure to micro manage him to take on any mob farther away with mighty blow, whirlwind and so on. These guys are especially good to go after enemy archers.

Tough fight if you don't have the right build/team. Came out of nowhere in terms of difficulty. Been breezing through on hard on my first playthrough, had been toying with idea of switching to nightmare.

Hawke rogue melee.
Aveline tank
varric controller/aoe
anders only healing
Had no problems with this at all, only had to control hawke, sometimes got some of the weaker enemies of varric or anders and then returned to killing varnell, pretty easy.
I actually had trouble going into the fade to free feynriel, because aveline had a spirit axe she'd kill both me and anders with 5 hits, we could barely damage her.... retried 5 times, then took her armor and weapons of before going into the fight lolz.
Edit:
This was on normal.

Make sure you do it before you enter the room. After that you will not longer be able to control the companion that succumbs to temptation..

Yeah, this is the way to do it. I could not even get close to killing Varnell, but once I did this I finished the fight easily. I am a Sword and Shield tank, and I have Merrill, Anders, and Isabella in my party. I put the two mages at the bottom of the stairs, and I stood at the top of the stairs.burb2500 wrote...
The problem with this fight is you have the enemy mobs spawning from both sides. Here's how I beat Varrel:
As soon as the fight starts, run back in the direction that you came (near the trapped chest). This does 2 things. A) it puts you behind the spawn point, meaning only the enemies initially on the field and Varrel will appear and attack you, andit funnels the enemy which is great for AoE spells. Just use your tank to block the corridor and protect your casters. Don't forget to put your team on hold (it means micromanaging them, but its better than them running off).
Once that group is dead, slowly move to where the fight starts. Enemies will then spawn in, but should be far easier to deal with.

Not gona let it beat me though so I have been doing all side and companion quests to level up and get a lil more savvy on this micro managing business ... bit of a beginner when it comes to that ...
I have Anders ( lvl 16), Varric (lvl 16) and Aveline (also lvl 16) with me ... me being a mage (yep you guessed it, lvl 16,lol)... so far the best tactic seems to be to run into the room up the stairs so it bottlenecks the mobs ... Aveline upfront with Varric behind her, only a lil off to the side so they cant squeeze past and me and the lovely Arlen at the back ... you would think that would work and it does for the first couple of waves ... then it turns to sh*t and we all die ...
So now I'm not sure what to do ... cant do any more quests til I do this one but it just wont go my way ...
Anders is healing while the rest of us bash away at the mobs using aoe, hail of arrows etc (all the things suggested here earleir) but how do I stop them attacking Ser Varnell, as soon as he gets close they all go for him and leave the lower ones alone ... hence we get nailed ...
And the other thing is they refuse to hold position ... off they go on their own track which kinda ruins the whole set up ...
If I can sort that out perhaps I will have a better chance of nailing them for a change ...
Grateful for any suggestions ...
