Hey,  I want to make a dps mage, but I really have no idea where to start. I know the main attributes to focus on are magic and willpower, but it's the skills that I need help with. I'm level 7 now, and I've been putting points across all the different trees instead of focusing on certain ones. I think that might be why my mage feels weak, since I haven't been upgrading. Any suggestions?

I know there were a few threads in the general discussions where people were sharing their possible builds, but with the search functions gone I can't find them. If anyone has links to such a thread, that would also be helpful. Thanks.

If you're playing on Nightmare Difficulty, don't bother. Otherwise it should be pretty straight forward. Pick elemental or primal and max them out and pew-pew away.

I like elemental.

Cone of cold is great for getting melee off you, firestorm and fireball just rock.

i went very deep into elemental, i think it was entirely upgraded.
i grabbed heal just cus well it would be dumb not to. adds alot of utlity and the ability to save people about to die.

put alot into forcemage, started out thinking it was a waste but once i learned how to use the spells properly it became AWESOME (super awesome specialization, i highly suggest it)

then a bunch of points into arcane for the shield and force crush spell (great against casters).

my second specialization i picked blood mage just for the health boost to make me less squishy, i didnt invest any actual skill points in it though.

by the end of the game he was easily my most powerful character, tossing dudes around, blowing them up and freezing them was his thing, and he did it wonderfully.

That's the exact charachter I'm going to build. Elemental+Force+Arcane/Creation Mix. Glad that it works so well.

Just wondering what is the best as second specialization...

elemental rocks. cone of cold then firestorm knocks out lots of baddies at once. add in a two handed warrior's earthquake type abilities(forget what they're called) you have a wrecking crew.

Force was my favorite. I used the Gravity spell in the center of the battlefield, used pull of the abyss and drew all the enemies into the center, then pelted them with Tempest, Fire Storm, and fist of the maker! Kills almost all normal enemies every time.

I used Force mage and elemental - was really good for smashing lots of bad guys at once.

Elemental is a pretty weak tree, with relatively low damage coefficients except for Firestorm, no cross class options besides unreliable Brittles and relatively little utility. The best overall tree is probably Primal, with strong cross class combo options with Petrify and Chain Lightning and better damage coefficients than Elemental, except Firestorm vs. Tempest. Tempest covers a much larger area than Firestorm, however, which is arguably more important, lasts longer and often causes the electricity damage mini-stun, making it ideal for controlling entire battlefields of minions. Also, in Nightmare, Primal spells don't have friendly fire, which is more than a little bit important.

Other strong damage spells include the upgraded Horror (often the top single target damage spell, plus a strong stun) and Walking Bomb. Walking Bomb is arguably the most powerful spell in the game, as it does damage equal to the health of the mob you just killed. What this mean is that you can take out groups of lieutenants by essentially killing just one (works extremely well with rogues). Unfortunately, in Nightmare Walking Bomb has friendly fire, making it almost impossible to use. In Normal though it's almost broken - only the relatively small radius and the micromanagement keeps it from being so.

Something to keep in mind is that at the beginning, you really want to be putting all your attribute points into your primary damage stat. Each point of DPS stat gives you 0.5 Base Damage. Later on, when your weapons are 30-40 Base Damage, the stat point doesn't mean as much, but at the beginning, each point you put into your base DPS stat gives you a 5-10% increase in your total damage per point (starter gear is 5 Base Damage). Base Damage affects all forms of damage, both autoattacks, special attacks and spells. Willpower isn't really useful except to hit particular thresholds for activating a series of abilities or to compensate for some sustained abilities.

Or you could just...Gravitic + Tempest to get the same results.:P

Primal is without a doubt the best tree, not only for damage, but damage reduction or damage that gets enemies off of you.  None of which can FF either. One point dumped into Entropy will go a loooong way in speeding up boss fights as well, and Spirit is probably the next best tree (for non specialization trees), although it seems really hard to get much use out of the CCC with disorient since disorient doesn't seem to even work.

if your wanting really fast attacks go for haste and upgrade it it doesnt last long but you can manage pretty well if you just go magic and willpower because i went spirit healer/creation for the high dragon and i never switched him back because i needed a healer and his skills were just good
