I have my mage and I am having trouble choosing which specialization combo to use because they ALL LOOK AWESOME!!!! I have the maker's sigh so I can always respec, but I sort off like the idea of a blood mage but I am not sure if it is good or if it works out too well with my play style (because you need to pump CON but still need WILL to wear decent armor) What do I do? Also I kindoff want Force Mage because I find I get knocked down too often and there is a passive ability that makes you immune to knockdown or spell interruption (+100 fortitude). BTW I want my character to be a DPS mage and Spirit Healer looks good just for the passive abilities and stat bonuses. Please leave your ideas, the mage class you use and any other useful suggestions like how to use anders effectively. I play on Hard difficulty. THANKS!!!

If you plan on playing on Nightmare the Primal tree makes a good base for your mage as none of those spells will harm your party. I have a level 9 mage on NM who only has points in the primal tree + the starting spell of Mind Blast.

I have chosen Force Mage as the first specialization. That helps to trigger secondary effects on all your attacks. I'll be getting Fist of the Maker though that is NOT a party friendly spell, but it dos not affect the caster.

My second specialization will be Spirit Healer but I'm not going to pick up any spells from that. Anders is providing the "cleric" role for my party.

For other spells I'm going to throw in some crowd control and curses.  The Glyphs were wonderful in DA"O so I'll be getting them, and I'll grab Horror for another boss disabler.

I had initially planned to pick up some one target damaging spells but I don't think they are worth it on NM unless they also provide crowd control, such as Paralyzing Prison.

For Hard, stick with Force Mage and Spirit Healer (even if it's only the Healing Aura). Those two specializations provide the most utility for your group. Even when using Anders. I chose Force and Spirit on my first playthrough and had zero complaints during the game, not once even thinking about respeccing.

If you do play Blood Mage (always paired with Spirit Healer), then make sure you plan ahead and respec when possible to take advantage of your health pool.

As for Anders, just make sure he doesn't power through his mana pool. Some other guides have solid builds / tactics to use that'll enhance his healing potential.

Thanks Guys, Why do you need Spirit Healer to go with Blood Mage? How Can I effectively use Anders and I like elemental because I have items that add up to +27% fire damage (staff of parthalan+13%, amuet of ashes +5%, generic boots with +4%, ring +5%) So what should I do...

4 words. Pull of the Abyss. Force mage is worth it for that alone. Regular mobs have no chance in hell against a Force mage with Primal and Elemental. I went blood mage as my other spec so I could keep casting in case my Lyrium potions were on cooldown.

I never really worried about pumping points into con on my mage and have so far only had two injuries so I don't think it's that important unless your going bloodmage. Also if you do go Bloodmage do your companions react to this?

You won't make it in nightmare without Unshakable from force mage. And gravitic ring is by far the best active in the force mage tree. 20 seconds of stun that even holds bosses, can't beat that. And no need to pump CON to insane levels on blood mage because of "1 additional mana per 1 health gear". It all stacks so you can get 6-7 mana from 1 health.
