In the BG series the protagonist was the son or daughter of an Old God--the Lord of Murder.
Keep that in mind. History tends to repeat itself, and so do games.

I fully expect that the protagonist in the expansion will be the son or daughter of Morrigain, who will face the moral dilemma of succumbing to the forces of darkness, and thus becoming a new Archdemon, or upholding the light, and becoming a "redeemed" Old God. Morrigain will play a role in the sequel to be sure, and you will be her offspring! She was so prominently featured in this game for a reason. The game "had" to end with her concieving a child with the soul of the Old God encased...for the expansion.

In a typical Bioware "twist" Morrigain, whom everyone thinks is "evil", might just turn out to be "good" after all, because she is the ultimate pragmatist. Did she have the prophetic vision to see that her offspring would someday save the world from the ultimate Blight, which would doom it forever?

The key to removing the Blight once and for all is to redeem the Old Gods, who have become Archdemons. The Archdemons are the source of the Blight.

By studying Flemeth's Grimoire Morrigain may have found a way. In fact, I would bet money that that was what Flemeth had been researching for centuries....how to redeem the Old Gods...the Gods of Nature. After all she was a "witch of the wild", and did not seem totally evil. After all, she "protected" the treaties for centuries, and offered sage advice on gathering an army to fight the Blight. She had to take on the bodies of her "daughters" so that her research could continue....for the good of the world. Otherwise, the world would be doomed in the future. Upon studying her Grimoire, Morrigain realized all of this, and saw a chance to put her mother's research into action...thats where she got the knowledge about the ritual.

Remember, even your protagonist in this game was "tainted" by darkspawn blood--which comes ultimately from the Archdemons. The Grey Warden's struggle to overcome the taint, at least for a while. In the expansion, you yourself will be the ultimate source of that taint--because you will have the soul of an Old God in your mortal body.

Will you redeem yourself, along with the other Old Gods, and thus put an end to the Blight once and for all, or will you succumb to temptation and revert to your Archdemon form, and thus bring about the destruction of the world? Its a perfect set up for the ultimate choice between good and evil. What could be more appropriate for an RPG?

That's an interesting thought - but I think it would be a cop-out to not provide the player closure with Morrigan's relationship with the current PC, and equally as much of a cop-out to make it always end tragically. The bittersweet ending that exists is very unsatisfying, and it does not really make sense she would be unable to elude the PC forever - especially in the case where the PC has the ring (which could easily be a plot device to find her). Plus the game ends telling you the world hasn't seen the last of your character, so searching for her is an obvious start for the next piece of the tale.
