Oooops I killed Avernus. I couldn't see a way to let him live. Looks like I will never get it since I killed him through 4 runs of DA:O.

Do you have to have the companion with you when you get an upgrade? I did the raiders on the coast quest and picked up the flex chain for Aveline. She was not in my party. I went back to add her and there was no Flex Chain in my inventory and she didn't have it added as an upgrade. Really stupid how this works. Maybe its a bug?

No they auto apply to the champ once looted. To see if the upgrade applied look at the lit up crystal shaped bars underneath the picture of the armor. That is the number of upgrades the armor has.

Well, I'm totally confused. There are armor upgrades that I know I found or purchased that just don't show up anywhere. The glowing bars do nothing to let you know which upgrades you do or don't have, and if they're ALL supposed to be listed under the armor as an upgrade, as some obviously do, then that's not happening either. What a screwy system. How the heck are we supposed to keep track?

Problem is that not all armor upgade effect the extra stats of the item, some might increase the armor value while others might add a rune slot. The only way to know what it does is to check the extra armor piece before you loot it. This is done by hovering your mouse over the item. The glowing bars let you know how many upgrades you currently have on the armor thus being the only reliable way to track said upgrades.
