They took pity on him. But wouldn't you hire a guy who beats the instructors in the academy?

Also, here's a 1000lb a pilot for you....

If this was reality I doubt Joker would be in the military I mean they said I wasn't allowed to be a female sniper either but he may've just barely made it in when he first started training maybe he wasn't as bad as he is now and I'm not sure if you need to pass a physical exam or strength test on a regular basis even in the military now.

The only way I can see them letting him in if he was in bad shape anyhow during his training days was some type of act in the law forcing the military to take people that are basically a hazard to themselves. But he doesn't need to run on the ship, and he doesn't need to really to combat. It's just a matter of will the ship crash or get blown to pieces while he's on it or at least that would be the case if he was paired with anyone but shep.

sorry for double post

You could try to do the next best thing which is be a counter sniper. I was suppose to go to that training back in may last year, but stupidly got myself in trouble. You still get to train on a sniper rifle and gain similar tactics of a sniper so that you can locate and take them out. I know some females that got to do it aswell.

Really? Well damn they didn't have that option when I tried to join!

I don't mean cause of his funny comments and stuff, I mean isn't there a physical to take before you're allowed in the military in the future? cause you still gotta pass pt to be a pilot, I know Joker ain't doin no push-ups or runnin a mile in under 8 minutes with his brittle bones. are there also 600lb pilots that we haven't seen yet?

You never seen some officers have you? Or some of the Tech guys. Point is if your skilled/important enough they'll let you cut alot of corners. Look at Maj. Hasan (sp) in that shooting case, here you have a bald, over weight man thats Anti American, and was known as being something of an Extreamist, and he's a Major as they needed all the shrinks like him they can get.

Plus we don't know what the Req's in the Future are at all. Hell they might not even do push ups anymore. Heck even the modern US military, saddly, new TRADOC for basic is Joint Standard for all branches and is more like Yoga. Which is very sad imo. And in any case it really doesn't bother your flying ability
http://en.wikipedia....Alexey_Maresyev theres one dude among several like himself in WW2. If your skilled enough or in a position thats hard to fill, you get to stay.  And two others to show its no fluke, or special treatment http://en.wikipedia....i/Douglas_Bader , http://en.wikipedia....rard_Hodgkinson , even if your bat **** insane they can make a use of you! http://en.wikipedia..../Jack_Churchill

Well its not actualy a career to do it, its a special training you can get depending on your actual career field. I was security forces (which is basicaly military police, but we do a lot of things besides law enforcement) in the air force so they needed some people to deploy that could do the counter sniper missions over in the middle east and state side if need be. Its not a common knowledge thing for poeple to know so Im sure the recruiter or whoever gave you your info didnt know about it themselves.

yeah, but those guys had already proved themselves in combat. if they'd had their legs amputated earlier in life they'd never have even been allowed to join the service. although now I'm going with the theory that joker had already shown some aptitude on flight simulators and that his condition wasn't so bad when he first joined.

But we are also assuming an understanding of Joker's condition. What if Joker was only bad as a youth and has gotten relatively stronger, both mentally and physically as he got older?

And from current medical understanding he likely has Type IV of the disease, so he can lead a relatively normal life.

So then what if Joker's main issue as an adult in the Alliance is simply dealing with his experience as a child with the disease?

I guess Joker is opposed to being cyborgized as Shepard obviously is. Just use metal skeleton to allow him full mobility.

I think you'll find that equality for people with disabilities in the future would have vastly increased and that anyone could do what they want within physical limitations, this is within Jokers physical limitations so he can do it.

I hate that kind of stuff in sci-fi, it reminds me too much of Harrison Bergeron

Know this is an old thread but...as someone whose legs don't work properly due to a genetic condition also and whose biggest dream was to join the army as a kid...

I love that kind of stuff in sci-fi, it reminds me that maybe one day I'll be able to do what I always wanted.

Sorry for the cheese lol, had to comment.

When you have the power to manipulate gravity, not being very strong isn't an issue.

Joker can fly because his ship has a mass-effect field, so regardless of the manuevers you take, the gravity on-board is  1G.

Joker couldn't be a fighter pilot, since a small ship like that would be pulling 7G turns.

In space, at those speeds? Turns like that without a mass effect field would be in the 10s of gs at least.

This actually raises a good question. There's always combat scenarios and emergencies, not to mention physical tasks that must be done.

I tried to join the military, but because I've got fragile skin I would never be allowed to.

On the other hand, in the future there's probably a much greater need for servicemen, so as long as you can do it why not? And if you're the best damn pilot in the navy, go for it!

There is also the factor that Joker says his disease isn't cureable and according to EDI he's taking pills to help but pain pills only do so much in reality with something uncureable I think someone like joker would be at a desk job at best not flying a ship that could potentially get blown up oh wait......

Dude. ME is an alternative reality.  Stop expecting it to fit our own.

He's in space, with gravity under control. Chances are he's not going to need to do a lot of moving. Sitting down in a seat all day is just the sort of job he is suited for.

It just so happens that in the future, such jobs would include piloting space ships.
