So I'm currently at the very beginning of Act 2, and I have a maxed rivalry with Carver. I refused to take him into the deep roads in favor of Merrill (It forced Varric upon me, and who wouldn't take Anders, everyone's favorite GREY WARDEN into the friggin' DEEP ROADS). Anyway, little bro ran off in a fit of what appears to be teenage angst and joined the f***king Templars. When I asked if he knew if his older brother was an apostate, he told me I was being selfish. As far as I'm concerned,  my siblings both died in Lothering because Carver Hawke is now dead to me.

(Also, he was hitting on MY adorable elven maleficar. Can't have that can we?) Posted Image

Anyone else believe Carver is a waste of space or is it my hatred of Templars and people who hit on Merrill that aren't me thats blinding me to some higher truth about lil bro?

I freakin' love Carver so far.  Yes, so far he's been a total jerk.  But he's a hilarious jerk!  I love having him the party SO MUCH, he's just so mean to everyone.

He hates me. He hates Varric. He hates Anders. He pisses off Aveline. He's scared of Fenris. He wants Merrill. I haven't even heard him talk to Isabela. Total A-hole.

Yep.  He is grumpy and has a HUGE chip on his shoulder.  I've heard him talk to Isabela, she hits on him a good bit and he seems to reciprocate slightly.  He's nice to her so far.  And I was shipping Carver and Merrill before the game even came out, so him flirting with Merrill just make me squee.

I really like how his relationship with Hawke plays out.  Their discussion/argument about Bethany, and when you're doing the Amell family quests?  SO awesome; it was the most believable emotion I'd gotten out of Hawke yet.

He's a grump with a heart of gold, though.  During one of the banters with Varric, they call each other horrible names... but then in the end Carver casually asks him if they're meeting for drinks later.   So now I think they just mess with each other for the lulz, not out of true dislike.

And during Fenris's recruitment, Carver tells him if he has a problem with Hawke, then he has a problem with Carver.  Rivalry was almost maxed at this point.  I had lots of warm fuzzies.  He may resent Hawke sometimes and they bicker more than they get along, but when push comes to shove, Hawke is his sister and he loves her.  Period.

I like Carver, guess I'm just used to having an annoying sibling. He just wants to be a part of your family. When you wouldn't take him to the deep roads, it was just like telling him he wasn't good enough, that you didn't believe in him. He said at the beginning of Act 1 that he wanted to go so you should probably have expected him to be pissed. Plus he leans towards the Templar side anyway because his family has always overlooked him because of mages like Hawke and Bethany.

Although I wish I had some help as far as getting friendship points. Even when I agree with him I don't seem to get any points for it. I want to get to 100% friendship but I don't know if it's possible.

LOL, seriously.  I can also definitely see Hawke leading Bethany in some childish pranks on their non-magic brother... like magically dying his hair yellow or something like that.

Carver is IMO the most developed character because of how easily one can hate him. As it stands right now, my opinion on everyone is:

1. Merrill - Puppy status.
2. Aveline - Cuz' she's always got my back.
3. Fenris - He's a boss. Period.
4. Isabela - Sex jokes help pass the time in Kirkwall.
5. Varric - The Crimson Chin.
6. Anders - Unfortunately, all the fun has been sucked clean out of Anders since Awakening. Damn you Karl. Too bad, he used to be one of my favorites.
7. Carver - Ungrateful little jerk.

Carver redeemed himself in my eyes at the end when he's a Templar and I sided with the mages anyways.

I believe he does in one of the first conversations you hear between the two of them (it's obvious he likes her).

Wasn't it said that Carver would always have a rivalry with his older siblings, whereas Bethany would have a better relationship?

Eep, pressed send before I meant to. I meant as in, Carver is always grousing about being in bigger Hawke's shadow whereas Bethany was totally cool with it.

So you don't have to fight/kill him if he's a Templar and you don't side with them? I wasn't sure how that would play out! Or which path he'd seem happier with...

My first playthrough was a warrior, so I ended up with Bethany. I ended up liking her alot, as I played the protective older brother she always looked to. The scene with her being dragged away by the templars when coming back from the deep roads was devastating. Freed her in the end though.

I'm looking forward to Carver, though. It'll be interesting to see my Hawke and him bicker, so that's what it sounds like Carver does. Glad to know the interaction with both siblings in this game is great.

*end game spoilers*

Meredith will tell Cullen and Carver to kill you, but they both refuse.  Carver says that he refuses to kill his sister.  I thought it was sweet considering how much he seemed to hate her at that point.

Carver never hated Hawke.  He resents her, but he still loves her.  I love their rivalry dynamic; I think it makes him a much more complex character.  Remember how he sticks up for her when Fenris is giving mage Hawke a hard time?  I love it.

played with both bethany and carver, and i have to throw my hat in with carver.

in my playthrough, he became a grey warden, and he and his brother worked out their differences and became friends. he said that making him a warden made him more than he was, gave him a purpose, and he thanked me and said he was proud to be my brother.

Aww, poor Carver.  After he joins the Wardens, Hawke still ends up saving him against his will THREE TIMES.  Every time Hawke shows up he's all "Stop sticking your nose in my business, I can handle it!"  XD

Yeah he's a jerk but I find him amusing. I'm taking him to the Deep Roads on my second playthrough though. Poor Bethany ended up in the Circle on my first play.

Lil' bastard wants to do something awesome with his life, you're gonna be a Grey Warden, that's what~!!!

Edit:
Also I liked that although he obviously has issues with Hawke, when you're doing the Cullen quest and talk to the recruits, I forget what they say about mages and Carver is like, "...and you point is?" kind of protective. I thought that was awesome. Maybe because I don't have a brother even if he acts like that I'm gonna be supportive~

So is there a way to at least make him a friend before the Deep Roads, or do we have to wait for Warden!Carver to be nice to Hawke? (And yes, I know that rivals aren't a bad thing in DA2, but hey, I like playing a good guy, and my brain still goes "Disapproval = BAD" after DA:O.)

Fenris's recruitment quest is even better.  When Fenris gives Hawke a hard time for being a mage, he says "If you have a problem with my sister, you have a problem with me!"   D'aww!  He hates being in Hawke's shadow and they bicker constantly, but it doesn't matter, they're family.

I love his reactions whenever Hawke gets uppity with templars, like he's frustrated that Hawke is just begging for trouble:

Hawke: Mages have been oppressed by templars for a thousand years!
Cullen: How can you say that after what you've seen?
Carver: [in a how-are-you-this-stupid voice] Yes, how can you say that to the templar right in front of you?

If you're a melee class(Warrior/Rouge) you'll always have Bethany, so the only way to get Carver is if you're a Mage class.

Carver is the best...

I replayed a lot of the side plot dialog and I loved the scripting... It's powerful stuff, it's like watching a motion picture or series episode where Hawke finally looses his composure any from the group and Carver and Hawke just have it... Carver finally gets off his chest what's been eating at him all these years. Hawke rips into him for mocking his every decision. You can tell there's history there and not just jealousy but resentment and insecurity on both sides... GREAT SCRIPTING!!!
