I don't like Carver either, but it's great for roleplaying purposes - he's the jealous brother who annoys Hawke all the time, but still cares about him/her. The family conversations were so believable. They sounded real. I still haven't decided if it would be better for him to be a templar or Warden in my current playthrough, but I'm leaning towards templar because of the drama.

Carver flirts with Merrill? Does Hawke get the chance to tease him about the fact that he has a crush on a blood mage?

played with both bethany and carver, and i have to throw my hat in with carver.

in my playthrough, he became a grey warden, and he and his brother worked out their differences and became friends. he said that making him a warden made him more than he was, gave him a purpose, and he thanked me and said he was proud to be my brother.

On the other end, Bethany is actually quite initially resentful of you making her a warden.

God, I love Carver, easily one of my favorite companions. The Hawke/Carver brother vs. brother relationship was easy to connect with, being an older brother myself.

I didn't like him because of roleplaying purpose. Sure...he's jerk and mean to most people(especially a mage), but so far Carver is great developed character. He just a normal in the family of people with magic powers not to mention that all the time he feel out of place and jealous of his brother. I just love conversation with him, and his banter which I found it quite emotional.

Nevertheless, he'd care and respect his brother Hawke, though, he isn't going to admit it. I'd think going with rival ways is most fitting, and make him a Grey Warden so he'll have something to score tie with Hawke.

On my first playthrough I didn't really like him, but later on in the game when he became a templar and stood by my side in the end I started to think that I may have been a little too hard on him. He actually is a pretty good character.

I did like Carver his comments about everything were great, I had an intense argument with him at the start too, in your crappy house, seemed very real.

I thought his conversations with Isabela were awesome, this one is my favorite "Why is everything about sex with you? It comes up everytime we speak" "Im just talking Carver, its your problem if it always comes up" "uuhhh what? no no thats not what i meant."

As much as Carver gets the upper hand when arguing with everyone, Isabella has his number.

He was by far my favorite companion and it broke my heart when he fell ill in the deep roads and I lost him to the Wardens.

My Hero of Ferelden gets to romance the crap out of him now so it's not all bad;)

I specifically didn't bring Anders into the deep roads to watch that Carver bastard die. Bwahahaha.
Awwwww... Can't handle the taint Carver?

I definitely love Carver. I felt so bad that he was always in the shadow of his older sibling, that I was determined to mend our relationship. It was really refreshing to see the subtle bits from him that showed he truly does love his older brother/sister, despite his snippy attitude. Watching our relationship grow after he joined the grey wardens felt very rewarding indeed!

Yeah, with what they did to the rest of your family, I was really scared I was going to have to kill him when I fought the templars at the end.

I love Carver, he is the most developed character in the game despite being optional and only for one act. I understand his resentment: his father was a mage, his older brother was a mage, his twin sister was a mage, and he is forced to spend his entire life moving from country to country (at least Free Marches to Ferelden) for something he never had a choice in and was no part of. He says that he never had a chance to truly make friends for fear that he would risk letting the Templars know about his "magnificent mage brother".

What I truly love is that despite the rivalry between the two Carver never truly betrays you. I made him a Grey Warden and when I sided with the Templars he said something along the lines of "What are you doing? I came all the way from Ferelden to help you, and now you side against your own people?" When Hawke stood by his choice Carver said that he will support his brother in whatever he does and asked to fight by his side again.

My favorite part was the talk before assualting the Gallows "The brother Hawkes together again. Mother always said it would take something this epic to bring us two together".

Without a doubt Carver has the most character growth out of all of your companions.

Carver is okay. I can see why he is what he was. He was a templar in my first mage play through and sided with me against Merideth. He basically says "if you want my brother you will have to go through me."

Awesome.

I find Carver to be more interesting than Bethany. Underneath all that jealousy and resentment he REALLY loves his family.

From what I read he is happier as a Warden than he is as a Templar.

I've played through with him as both. Personally, I liked him as a warden better. You have more chances to interact with him before the endgame (during the Qunari attack and then during the Finding Nathaniel quest). I think he ends up happier this way, too.

Honestly, I really like Carver. Yes he's a natural rival, but his dynamic with Hawke is very natural. I buy them as siblings because I had a similar dynamic with my own sister.

I love my brother! Yeah he's a jerk with a huge chip on his shoulder but that's what makes him so interesting and fun. I nearly jumped for joy when *spoilers* he joined me for the final boss!

I blame it on the beard. He's jealous of it's awesomeness.

I thought Carver joining the Templars made for the perfect story. The only two Hawkes left were Carver and the Champion and they were standing on opposite ends of the final conflict. I loved when he asked me if I was willing to fight my own brother and I asked him if he was.

It was perfect when he refused to kill me for Merideth in the end.

I was going to play a warrior at first, but based on all that happened I am really happy I went with Mage.

I think some of that is him being really pissed that you went to the deeproads without him, he hated that choice.

How were we supposed to say 'no' to Leandra when she begs you to keep at least one of you out of harms way?

I love Carver! He might be a pain in the rear but he IS Hawke's younger brother. Who group in as the only child without magical abilities. I'd probably be resentful too. I like that Hawke and Carver don't get along all the time but at the end of the day they have each other's backs.

I actually felt really bad leaving him behind in Act I. Leandra really wants him to stay though, obviously. I don't know how anyone could say no to that. So it wasn't that Hawke didn't want him there (she did)...she just didn't want to leave Mommy dearest alone.

Like (spoilers ahead) when he's kidnapped during Act III. He might infuriate my dear Samantha Hawke but she still dropped everything and rushed to save him. He's her brother...and nobody picks on him (except her, of course).

Aye, but that's always been a part of Carver's grief, hasn't it? For his entire life, it's never been what he wanted, everything has always been for the sake of the rest of his family. He's never really been able to stand on his own as a person, for good or ill: keeping him back is just one more time.

Carver has good reason to feel smothered by his family, and that's just one more of them. He's never being allowed to self-actualize as a person, and that would drive anyone up a wall.

Man, I love Carver. Completely plausible.

My 1st run was mage Hawke, and I made Carver a grey warden.

I absolutely LOVED their interaction, loved that they had that tension. I loved how even when Hawke spoke the diplomatic or 'top right' lines he still expressed frustration at Carver's attitude. It was clear Carver had a lot of issues being the younger brother living in Hawke's shadow.

But at the end of the game when Carver came back -- oh god it was wonderful. He was thankful for his chance to be a grey warden, and said it had made him realise he needed to do good. Such amazing character growth, and it made me wish there could have been more interaction in the later acts with him.

(not feeling as much love for Beth during my rogue run ... not sure whether to let her die or be taken off to the circle though, either would work as motivation for my pro-mage rogue.)
