What actual impact does importing have?

Alright, please try to minimize the "I HATE DIS GAME" or "I LUV DIS GAME" comments. I've been trying rather unsuccessfully to figure out what, if any, meaningful impact importing a DA:O saved game has on Dragon Age 2.

Across several forums and talking to my friends who have played so far, the only actual gameplay impact someone mentioned was:

- You get access to one merchant if you had chosen Bhelen as leader of Orzammar, you wouldn't have access to this guy otherwise (?)

Besides this, every other comment i've seen points to the feeling that importing a DA:O save has less impact on DA2 than Mass Effect 1 importing had on ME2.

Outside of general roleplay/story, does it actually have any impact? My friend says he had maybe one total quest where someone mentioned Alistair as king and that was about it.

I noticed a few quests were opened to me whilst using an import ( I used a generator cause I just switched to PC gaming), but one quest was the conspirators. Another was where Lord Harrowmont was trying to escape from Kirkwall, but that was choosing teh other dwarf as king in DA:O. Not sure about the other impacts atm, but I'll keep a lookout.

Who's the merchant?

Anyway, with my import.

My mother/sister mentioned my cousin is the hero of fereldan, alistair makes a cameo saying he needs help for fereldan, but only the viscount can help or something, and that's basically it.. ._.

Unless i missed some other things.

There's a quest dependent on how you handled the werewolves in Origins. If you take the No Compromise default he lead the wolves against the Dalish and you get a quest to find some herbs to help the werewolves hold on to their sanity which is slipping away. Whereas if the wolves were turned back into humans by breaking the curse there is a scene in which Danyla's daughter confronts one of the once-wolves upset over her mother's death and you have to resolve that. I'm sure there is probably another little mini-quest for if you destroyed the wolves too, but I haven't seen it yet.

I imported and somehow Leliana was still alive and said she travelled with me, even though the file I imported saw her die in Lothering so apparently it makes little difference. The only thing I've noticed is people mentioning the wardens, Alistair as king, and my warden becoming a hero to mages everywhere so that's always fun.

Alistair's cameo changes depending on your DA:O playthrough. In my game he showed up as a drunk in the Hanged Man claiming to be a prince. Hehe. That matched the import.

I was kinda sad to see Zevran cheating on my Warden with Isabela, lol. *sigh* Either he never really loved her or the save import doesn't take into account the DAO romances. (What happens if you import a save where your Warden married Alistair? Does he mention his queen?)

Another thing... Nathaniel said my Warden spared the Architect but that's not what happened in my save either.

When you imported did it register your awakening save. I tried with my witch hunt one but it told me I ddin't beat origins with it so I had to go with my end game origins save only. Thus all awakening choices are default ones. Could that have happened with your file?

You can pretend that they didn't actually have sex!  Pretend that Zevran ended up simply crying on Isabela's shoulder about missing his true love.  :D

Nathaniel is confused about the Architect on my file, too.  I guess his brains got addled a bit?

This is roughly what Alistair says about his queen:

Alistair: Time to get back to old ball and chain, then.
Teagan: You know the queen hates it when you call her that.
Alistair: No, she doesn't.  Anyway, just because she killed an Archdemon doesn't mean I'm scared of her.
Teagan: ::laughs:: You tell yourself that.

All said in a joking fashion, of course.  I thought it was really cute.

It looks like you sometimes get the wrong results from your import. There was thread about that a while ago. It is buggy to say the least. It seems that when doing a second playthrough with the same import will produce correct results. So far the impact of the DA:O events seem cosmetic (similar to ME1 and ME2), but I am not very far into the game and I cannot compare another import yet. So maybe I am wrong.

Yes, this.  Mostly the import is just there to provide references that Origins players will appreciate.  There are some quests you can't access any other way (like the Nathaniel one, I think), but even then only Origins players would really care about those quests in the first place.  Still a good feature, though.  I loved the references.

I am sure it will have some historical impacts in the background for DAII. I just remembered that I ruined the Dwarven City Ostagar(sp?) so I would imagine that would have an impact on the dwarven population. Maybe when I run into Sandal and his Pa will shed some light on that. Also my character from DA:O did the Dark Ritual w/ Morigan so maybe ill run across a crazy kid with the soul of a Old God! That would be crazy! Great post. I am egar(sp?) to find out for myself when I jump into DAII full speed! I am currently finishing ME2 (PS3) and getting my character ready for import into ME3.

That does sound cute. ^_^ I unfortunately don't have a completed Warden Queen save on file to import - my only Alistair romance save is one where Anora ruled alone as Queen while Alistair and my mage ran off together. I doubt Alistair shows up at all in DA2 with that import...

I'm really curious about something, though. Can anyone tell me what happens if you imported a save where Leliana was hardened? I heard something about her acting differently in DA2 if she was hardened (like she's a spy against the Chantry, not working for them). Is that true?

I have gotten references to Alaistair as king. I've also seen hawkers claiming to have ashes from Andraste's urn to cure your aches and pains.

First save I imported was from my lawful goodly version. I kinged Alastair, spared Loghain (and fed him to Morrigan). I voted for Bhelen against Harrowmont in that play through, though. So far that has made no difference.

I was also wondering about if anyone who imported had any problems, I didnt import because i saw thread about the choices being garbled up and changing by Act2. So I just used the Default Warden(Recommended one) because i didnt want to run into any of the problems i heard and sounded like i could do that if i just played Hawke with a Default Warden.

I haven't had any many issues with importing, but I actually had to carry over a save where I hadn't finished Awakenings yet. So that might be why?

The only 'wait, what' issue I've had is Nathaniel claiming that the Warden Commander spared the Architect, when even the plot summary for my loaded save claimed "The Architect was killed" as a variable. Has anyone had him -not- say that?

I found a Gray Warden letter from Avernus to the first warden concerning unlocking the secrets of the blood research he was apparently able to complete after conversing with the architect.

If you pick Anora as queen, then Alister is a drunk at the Hanged Man.

I got the Architect as alive, too, although I killed the evil bastard with prejudice. I hope this is fixed for my next playthrough.

I got several references to choosing the Circle of Magi boon at the end of Origins. Meredith was giving Alistair crap about it when I walked into the keep, and he was very pro-mage when I talked to him.

I'm glad I used the toolset to fix that flag. :)

So far besides references to the Hero of Ferelden, I´ve saved the last Harrowmount from Bhelen´s assassins, talked down a Dalish from killing a former werewolf, and found a letter from Avernus (really wonder what he found so big that he encripted it and sent to Weisshaupt). Much better than a lot mails.
