My first playthrough is a Male Hawke rogue.
I've recently noticed there have been more than 1 occasion in which every response results in Marrill's rivalry instead of friendship. Even when using the icons with wings and a Halo that are supposed to represent the "good" response. I don'tt understand, isn't that what the hammer icon is for? the "renegade"response? I could understand if it was an isolated incident, but because this has happened more than once, I don't know what to do to raise her friendship. It's slowly moving toward rivalry regardless of my responses (even after reloading and trying all)
Is there something I'm missing? The only thing I can think of is a gender-specific issue. She responds to male hawke w/ rivalry, and female w/ friendship? But then why have icons at all if that's the case?
If anyone could help me clarify on this subject, I would greatly appreciate it.
Question regarding Merrill's friendship

The dialogue isn't arranged by good vs. bad. You are saying the same thing, but in different tones (peaceful, sarcastic, or tough). She's reacting to the choices you make, not so much what you say. She's very sensitive about how you treat mages and elves. She's also very touchy if you disagree about her consorting with demons.
Rivalry isn't necessarily bad. Don't feel like you need to change how you play just to be her friend.

Well after we killed that rock -spider thing and she cried over Pol's body, every outcome resulted in rivalry. What choice did I do to instigate an all rivalry response? I can't remember the other incident, but I know it happened. I was just wondering if this was a common issue, or maybe just a fluke.
Also, thanks for clarifying that, makes more sense now.

Yeah, essentially it's not good vs bad, it's how you react to things they feel strongly about.
With Merrill, she likes it when you defend her, and defend misunderstood mages. She's also ok with reasonable comprimises and peaceful solutions.

For Pol's death, you can't choose, What did you do to make him run, option. That will result in rivalry.

One thing that puzzled me, I got rivalry points with her by letting her join me in the Fade after she asked to come along. That didn't make a ton of sense.
I do like the rival/friend approach, it's a lot better than approval versus disapproval although still quite similar.
