Inon Zur Lets it Slip: DA2 Was Rushed Because of EA

IGN has a chat with Inon Zur in which he quite clearly states that he had to rush the DA2 musical score
since EA wanted to push DA2 out so quickly to capitalize on DA:O's success.

Now, this is obvious to most of us anyway. We all know it. But it's nice to hear someone who worked on DA2 actually say it. I wish BioWare would be more honest with its fans like Zur was. Just admit you rushed it out because EA executives wanted you to. Maybe that would make the EA executives not push you around so much. …Or maybe it would get you pay cuts and/or fired…or maybe you like to rush out products also? Again, your silence makes us assume you don't mind being EA's [insert your favorite term, perhaps thrall?].

And to the people who think DA2 is perfect, here you have obvious proof DA2 was rushed. It is not the game BioWare could have made if they had time to really do justice to it. Now much respect to BioWare for putting
out something as good as DA2 in so little time. But the flaws of DA2 are very numerous, mostly being due to lack of development time (reused locations, lack of diversity of locales, very barren and bland environments, stripped out
skills, ect.). I can't help but think some of the design "decisions" were more like forced changes to cut down development time.

Anyway, DA2 is a good game because BioWare are talented. But think of how good it could have been if BioWare wasn't beholden to EA. I write this because I hate the fact that any artist must be forced to do things that are
disgraceful to their art, and if putting out a rushed sequel to a fantastic RPG isn't a disgrace, then I don't know what is.

(But I still love you BioWare…just with the type of love that constantly criticizes you because I still think you're better than this.)

sigh...this was obvious but...

god damnit BioWare...EA is the bully, and you guys are the school nerds being held up by your ankles having your heads flushed down the toilet.

Don't let them ruin somehing you've worked so hard to create ffs.

Yeah, the rush is pretty obvious. Most of the issues would be fixed if only the game had a longer development cycle. Such as the recycled dungeons, some bugs, game size for some and the camera issues.

But while its nice to see Inon Zur talking about it, I'm not so sure that BioWare spilling the guts would be the same. That would be a sucky kind of professionalism.

Mind you that Inon Zur is only talking about his field. Soundtrack is a bit buggy.

I hardly noticed there was a musical score. There was no memorable music at all.

Thanks for the link, and yeah just as I expected DA2 was a rushjob, an ok one at that but man it could've been so much greater if they had the time.

I wanted to believe this post but when I found out you don't even have badges for the bioware games, I've lost interest in your brain fart. Stay cheesy though :-)

I knew this was going to happen but was blinded by the hype and the partially locked demo content.

I'd be wary of posting things of this nature, it's come up recently that attempts to paint EA in a negative light may be grounds for blocking not just posting privileges here on the forum, but general use of purchased products as well.

Extrapolation on what those grounds are exactly did not come up before the "end of line", so proceed with caution.

What a surprise...the only one not admitting it are the ones forced to rush it in the first place.

Considering Bioware's (past) commitment to polished games, I think the ones most pissed about the whole thing must be...Bioware itself, or at least whats left of it.

I knew this would happen when EA acquired the company, remember what happened to Mythic?

QFT. And the main score from DA:O is what I think of when I think of Dragon Age.

My games are registered on another, much older account, with a really bad name. My opinion has no value because of that?

Even if said opinion is a Link?

i feel bad for them...they spent the greater part of a decade on the DA world so some ****ing suit can come by and take a huge dump on it. This is terrible.

Do I think DAII is perfect? No. Do I think DAII is the best RPG in a decade? Yes. Regardless of the timeframe, it's still a fantastic RPG. If they had worked on it for another year, would it have been better? Of course.

However, would it have been better in ways that would silence the "haters" on BSN right now? No. Everything would be the same, except dungeons would look different from one another. Maybe we'd have gotten to play out that first year in Kirkwall. Who knows?

But the game would play the same, the companions would still have static outfits, and the dialogue would be the same. Luckily, those are three of the things that make DAII the best RPG in a decade.

So, nice going EA. You cracked the whip, and it worked. BioWare turned out a rush-job that manages to still be better than the five-years-in-development preceding title. Please don't make a habit of it.

I ****en called it, man. It's the only logical explanation for this being so substandard compared to their other games.

For any other mentally handicapped people who can't read, this is the direct quote

EA really wanted to capitalize on the success of Origins, so the game was really being pushed hard to be released now.

From people involved in making the game..

Jesus christ. Nothing more hilarious then seeing consumers defend cost cutting and rush jobs for higher corperate profit at there expense.

Who are these people?  I haven't seen any.  Perfect for someone and perfect for everyone are different things.

Brumbek wrote...

here you have obvious proof DA2 was rushed.

Looks like they skipped over all the stuff I don't care about, and managed to cover or improve all the stuff I do care about in a short development cycle.  They could have rushed this game out in two months for $600 and I still would have loved it.  Doesn't mean everyone will, or that everyone should, but it works for me.

But apparently people have to pick sides between "This is the best game ever and anything done by EA/Bioware is gold" and "The sky is falling this game is awful compared to its predecessor and EA is filled with greed demons."   Count me out.
