So, I completed my first playthrough as a "paragon" male warrior with dry wits.
Now I'm going through my second playthrough as a "renegade"/greedy female mage, trying to help NPCs and companions as little as possible but still having access the main storyline quests (I'm not sure what triggers them yet), in order to see any major changes in the world. Has anyone else successfully NOT recruited Isabella, Merrill or both?
Right now I'm in act one, and obvisouly I need 50 sovereigns (~44 right now) to fund the expedition, and these are some of the things I've done to observe any lasting effects:
-told Fenris to pay me then get lost when I met him
-haven't done any quests except "Tranquility" for Anders to get the Warden maps
-haven't exposed Aveline's captain: "The way it should be" is incomplete, to see if she stays a simple guard
-given the amulet to Marethari, but haven't spoke to Merrill
-unfortunately, I tried to not help Isabella but needed gold (and still do) so I kill off Hayder & company
So the only seemingly successful anti-companion move is telling Fenris off.
It seems that ignoring people's pleas for help is quite difficult
