What did you do with the first book? How many books do you have so far? Are you walking around with your finger on the tab button? When you enter the wounded coast, head north, it's along the top.
If you're doing Aveline's patrol quest, it's near one of the signals.

The cave unlocks at some point, I found it during the Aveline's Patrol quest, also if you picked up a book or read one, you currently cannot complete the quest anyway, just a heads up

So, the quest is bugged if you chose to use the books?

It's not bugged. That's intentional.

How so? If you use all the books, then that's an ending as much as destroying them all. BTW, do you get anything from the books if you read them?

Using any book grants +two attributes which will only works one time.
Taking books summons a small fight of shades and such, bonus XP.
Destroying every book summons a boss for an easter egg. (Want to know what you get? go play out option three.)
@LessThan1337: posting every few hours asking about a sideline quest for a game that only hit full release a few days prior and demanding a response is no tactic. Put down the red bull, take a deep breath, and use tab (or whatever your binding is if you changed it) as Caliban suggested.
In addition to which for anyone with similar issues; before concluding mainline quest stages I recommend hitting the 'J' key and double checking your journal for companion and side quests that you may have missed/overlooked and you may often discover that the quest you were fretting over is completed through other quests be it unlocked areas, items, or plot points.

Okay, not to make you sound like an idiot or anything, but often times people on these forums end up having not looked at the right place, but are you sure you're checking for the right location?

what i want to know is why can you not complete the quest if you have read one book? seems silly. i dont like being told whats intentional by other players who didnt make the game btw
i feel like its an oversight or something. oh well i chose to read the first book i picked up. guess i miss out on a super cool boss? for what reading the book? i cant find the final book cuz i read one? then the quest should update itself saying i failed or something jeez.

I agree with MrSaberTooth. One reason I didn't want to destroy books was because I didn't want to get rivalry with merril. However, what's so different in taking the books and then destroying them from the inventory?
Doesn't matter which option you choose, it still spawns mobs. Also, when I found the first book, I read it and thought it was ok, one because Merril liked it, and 2 I got stat boost. So just because of that I can't complete the quest? Seems bugged to me, like Saber said, it should update as failed.

@MrSaberTooth
The quest itself states to destroy all the books. If you choose to read the book, you make a deal with the book to read it and then leave it behind, thus not destroying it.
I know reading and/or picking up the book puts the quest in your journal anyway, a quest you then cannot complete, but the quest does state that it requires the destruction of every one of the books. I guess it's so you can see what it requires, so you can decide if you want to reload... or just do it 'properly' with your next play-through.

If you got the 2 skill points or attribute points, not sure since I haven't done this one yet, it didn't fail. You got something out of it. Fail would be you can't do the quest the other way AND you got nothing out of it. If you destroy all 5 and read the 6th, yes there's a total of 6 books. Then you get the points and the Boss fight and a cool staff.

You can't do anything but destroy the books. On my first playthrough I saw one, and read it, then destroyed it, went searching for the other ones only to find that I couldn't complete the quest because I read the book prior to destroying it.
Ah well.
Ah well.

@shazzie that makes a problem in and of itself because the quest stays in you book. when the time comes and the game itself tells you to wrap up any final business the player is left searching for the books because he wants to finish his quest.
The main point is the Quest itself needs to update and says it has failed, that is all. Because if it is not that way the player can not know unless he searches online for this unique circumstance. I say it is an oversight and needs updating. Its an issue and i believe they should patch it for the players sake.

So me reading and then taking the book that i found in the chantry and fighting the abominations that spawned just made the whole quest a dud??

You need to destroy the books because it's the only way to gain access to the last location. Reading one or taking one invalidates this. There are five main books, destroying them reveals the location of a sixth, final tome and a pretty epic boss fight.

Quick note: If you read the Fell Grimoire and get the stat boost at the end, the fight will still trigger and you will still get the achievement.

Bummer. Oh well something else to add to the list of bugs to work around in my next playthrough.
I must say that even though these bugs are annoying! Much respect to Bioware and associates for this game. Love it!!

It is not a glitch that you can't continue. If you read the options when you choose, it tells you that the book makes a deal with you. If you leave it alone it will give you the bonus attributes. When you take the deal the text then says Hawke has trouble even looking at the book. The deal essentially casts a spell on you in exchange for the attributes that keeps you from turning around and destroying the books. By taking the bonus attributes, you cannot pursue the rest of the quest line and get the loot/xp from that. It is an mutually exclusive choice, like many of the quests in DA2 (and DAO) for that matter.

Think of the books as seals. Destroying them unlocks the last location.
