Alright let me start off by saying I really thought the Relationships in Dragon Age Origins were a tad strange but easy to get involved with and semi-rewarding. Both men and women had a small variaty of characters to romance with and some bi-sexual.

Mass Effect was decent in the romance department, low varaity but when ME2 came out the varaity deepend and I loved that quite a bit - very easy to pick up on, and it wasn't too hard to gain a love interest.

So this brings me to my problem...I've been trying my ass off to romance Merrill on DA2 - I can't find much room to flirt with her (I can't find any conversations to do such) and I can't do much more in terms of giving her a gift (theres only one left to give). Far as I know the "questionable paths" thing is a character specific quest based on your romance option - which apparently mine was Fenris?

Alright I'm a male playing a male - and I did NOTHING to engage in any romance with anyone but Merrill; because I'm straight and because Isie is a total skank who has Anders cure some form of Aids hah.

It seems that Bioware is REALLY pushing the "guy on guy" / "gay" love here - because no matter what the hell I do; they won't back off! At one point I've decided trying to just remake the damn character - ignore Fenris / Anders very existance if that is possible or killing them or something - just to get them to fu** off.

Anyone see this problem personally yet?

Anyone have tips on Merrills relationship?

I'd appriciate the non-bias comments who are helpful and joking / serious - thanks for reading!

Getting that quest with one character doesn't preclude you from getting it with another, as far as I can tell. As for Merrill, once you get her friendship or rivalry up far enough you can get a quest to talk to her, after which she'll appear back at your house to start the romance.

I didn't however - which is very odd. I mean yeah I would imagine Bioware wouldn't jerk you like that but honestly my guy is going to boardline tell Anders/Fenris (though Fenris has badass music, badass looks, badass attitude, basically is the Dante of Dragon Age) to go kill themselves because I can't stand how much they seem to be "pushing" them into a relationship type position with me.

I mean every damn conversation I seem to get into with them is ""OH I LIKE YOU"" then ""ZAP - gay time"".

Merrill hasn't done much during Act 2 so far (just started it) but I gave her one gift and basically thats it.

The Questioning whatever quests don't show up just because you're romancing them. You have to flirt with them before you can get into a romance, so if you're in a romance with one of the guys, you chose a dialogue option with the heart next to it.

So let me ask you this..

Q: Questioning Quests go for everyone anyway?

and

S: I didn't choose the "Heart" sections as I knew they were romances - but damn they push you to say things really flirty anyway. Anders kept goin up my ass when I was being "Tactful" - it was kind of creepy.

I think they trigger once you reach a certain point on the Friendship/Rivalry meter for any companion, yes. I know I got it for Fenris, Sebastian, and Merrill at least when I played, and I only romanced Fenris (never flirted with anyone else, either).

I don't know anything about them pushing you to be flirty, though; I never had a problem with that. Anders was mostly just angry at me.

Edit: It's also possible the Questioning conversations pop up after you've completed a certain amount of personal quests for the companion. I can't remember, sorry.

Yeah you really have to watch what you are doing or you will find yourself flirting and chatting up some dude/dudette and finding yourself a bit put off.

The Questioning quests show up when you hit 50% in either direction for any of the companions. It has nothing to do with romance at all. Romance only happens if you use the heart icon in the conversation.

Relax. Whoever you end up with, it's not going to be a surprise. :)

This.

Just avoid all dialogue options with a heart, and it shouldn't be a problem.  My Lady Hawke was able to get Isabela to 100% friendship without coming across romantically interested at all.

This. In fact I believe that there are two Questioning Beliefs quests per companion (sometimes they are named different things - one of Varric's is "An Anniversary" and one of Merrill's is "Merrill - Friend or Foe"). You get one per companion at 50% rivalry and then again at 100% to lock them in at either friend or rival.
