Sten is just a title that Qunari share. I recall killing multiple Stens. Don't think it was the specific NPC you're thinking of.

He mentions in DA:O that Sten isn't his name, it's a rank.

I freaked out a bit at first too, though.

I thought the same thing, I saw Sten and was like what, but then I remembered reading somewhere his name means commander

Sten is, roughly and vaguely translated accurately enough to get the sense of the word across the Qunari term for "squad leader."  (I'd go with "noncomissioned officer" but that'd be more technical and potentially less accurate, depending on their command structure they could be junior officers, no idea).

Take Zevran and Sten with you in DAO and eventually you'll hear some banter that clarifies this.

The question is, which one could he have been?

Which is the real Sten?

The real Sten has no horns. Well that solves that.

They all are. However the Sten who fought with the Warden doesn't have horns. I believe the explanation is that certain branches of the Qunari military - the advanced recon as it were, of which that Sten was a part - are in some sense chosen because they are born hornless and would blend in better in human lands.

Also, I think I read somewhere that being born without horns is a sign of favor, that you are blessed by the Qun for a great destiny (hey, look he helped the Hero of Ferelden defeat the Blight in a year, when every previous Blight took 30-40 years) or something like that. They don't see it as a birth defect (as it probably is genetically?) but as a blessing.

The Sten from Dragon Age was chosen as an emissary of the qunari and sent to find out what the Blight was because he was able to better fit into human society being born hornless. And we didn't kill Sten from DAO as none of the qunari seen in the game were without horns.
