So, I just finished Dragon Age II. It's not as good as Origins in my opinion, but I'm mad for games that let you have as wildly varied backgrounds as it did. On the plus side, the narrower scope of DA2 means there's more time to focus on the little things - Hawke's family actually felt like family, unlike the relatives in various Origins backgrounds.
The characters were good, the amount of interaction between them is a massive improvement, and I didn't miss the ability to fully equip them nearly as much as I anticipated. The faster pace of combat took some getting used to - I was in the Deep Roads before I stopped thinking "Wow, they're moving quick" in every fight - but with judicious use of the spacebar I managed to keep things under control.
Now, for the meat of the review - choices and consequences. This is what every "old school" and "hardcore" RPG player screams about being wrong in games today. "There's always a pure good or puppy-kicking evil end to every quest!" they cry. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that despite indications of Hawke's tone in the dialogue wheel, the choices aren't always as black and white as in, for example, the Fable games, which are possibly the worst offenders in this regard. Trying to play as good-hearted, mage-friendly guy who knows when it's time to get his hands dirty, I experienced my decisions coming back to bite me at a later date, which has often been absent in BioWare games before. I like it - something the developers should keep in future titles, I think.
So, a summary for those wanting one? It's not a step forward or a step back, it's a step sideways. It's not the incredibly wordy novella that Planescape: Torment fans want, it's not the stat & item celebration that Baldur's Gate fans want, it's a game that embraces the character elements of the RPG genre instead of the number crunching. Ignore the extremists on both sides of the argument - the game is neither the end of PC gaming as we know it or the greatest game ever. I suggest trying before you buy, but I don't regret my purchase in the slightest.
