Is there any way to let Anders down WITHOUT making him gain rival points? I'm playing a male Hawke and would love to be his friend, but when I talk to him in his "residence," there's no way to avoid the subject of him crushing on me. I want to be his friend, but there's no path out of the romance here that doesn't gain him 10 Rivarly points, AND make him act really poorly toward me. But I have a feeling that if I don't do this conversation, it will keep the rest of the conversations with him locked, right? :-/ So what do I do?

I turned him down. There's sufficient opportunities to gain Friendship with him, so it won't be a big deal in the long run.
