Ah, my sweet Alistair. This romance was so bittersweet for me because I just recently broke off a 2 year relationship due to real life responsibilities/pulls making it unworkable. Nothing important as one of us needing to step up and rule a nation, but still. The IG breakup with him hit close to home, not gonna lie.

I had this issue too, but more because he used the heir issue to break up with my city elf (don't know if he does that with everyone).  I had to do a lot of back tracking after that and put Anora on the throne instead. I was just too angry with him to even continue otherwise, as irrational as that sounds.

I guess that's a good thing, since it means his character had so much depth that he triggered a strong emotional response.

of course, he still thinks he's king in some dialogues. Does that mess up the end game? Haven't reached it yet - just fighting the archdemon..

If only Alistair had more balls and wished you we're his queen. Then ferelden would have its first Elven/Human royal family. A large step in bringing the elves back from their exile.

It's just not a Dragon Age story line though is it? Maybe in future expansions/games. I truelly respect what the writers have done in this case. So many times game writers have allowed players to change their characters, I'm glad david gaider didn't.

OK, I'm gonna be all contrary now and say that technically you can change Alistair, when you have the option to harden him or not. It just happens to be in a subtle way.

But actually, it's enough of a change that it makes me want to play his romance again to see how he reacts diferently to things afterwards. Man, there just aren't enough hours in the day for me to play the game as many times as I want. I've still got my male mage I need to play with.

Eh, to be perfectly blunt you were very politically naeive (and I don't mean that badly). Elves are essentially like black people in 1950's southern america. You/we have a hard enough time as it is getting them to accept the king's bastard child; no way in hell they're going to be accepting his 'knife-eared' (bleep) from the alienage. My cynical elf saw that little heartbreak a mile off.

Which was a shame, because she kinda started fancying him in the first meeting. my elf was hooked when she heard 'I was going to name one of my children after you; the grumpy one!' and the romantic in me would have melted into goo with joy at that happening. Sadly, the realist in both myself and my elf knew, wasn't gona happen.

Just inserting another swoon into the thread.

SWWOOOOOOON!

Yeah.  Alistair is win.

...I have nothing constructive to say at the moment about that.

I am a little upset about the bugs in the epilogue.

WTF?

This time around I am going to try 'hardening' him (insert dirty joke here), and perhaps going for the Anora as Queen option.

p.s. I hate the forced Morrigan proposal. A lot. There could have been so many other options...and Bioware, why the romance music. Clearly Alistair is not happy about it. And I thought this was a ritual? Didn't look very ritualistic to me! One candle? Seriously?

Pfft.

Yes, you're right. I've updated it to include this, as well as the option to get Anora and Alistair to marry and rule jointly.

It's still not complete, but it's getting there.

Having played through first with a hardened Alistair and then the second time by leaving him sweet and innocent, I have to say I prefer the former. He is far more "adult" about *some* things, but not so much about others. He's still a really nice guy either way.

My archdemon fight was bugged tho, I didn't make him King and he talked about as if he were. Maybe he meant figuratively, like he came to terms with his blood. I don't feel like replaying that part again to see if I get something different.

During your conversation with him regarding Morrigan's ritual, Alistair always acts like you made him king no matter who you chose at the Landsmeet so I think it's a bug. I reloaded and replayed that part with different choices so many times I have it memorized and he ALWAYS says the same thing no matter what.

Anyway, I just wanted to add a little tidbit to add to the many wonderful ways of Alistair. In one playthrough, I was a mage and I made him king, so he came to me after the Landsmeet and told me we had to break it off. And this was where he wasn't changed after the sister incident so no matter what, I couldn't convince him NOT to break up with me. It broke my heart but since I was going for the achievements, I figured ok this was my chance to get Ultimate Sacrifice. Prior to entering Denerim for the last time, where each of the characters comes up to you and says goodbye, his was kinda formal and he called me a "friend" so I wasn't prepared for the very end at all, when he flatly refused to let me die and admitted that he still loved me. I was like OMG what a sweetheart!!!

One of these days, I would so love to meet the Bioware developer who created Alistair and hug him because he gave us ladies such a LOVELY character!

Poor Alistair gets too much hate from us guys. Sure he's emotional, but who wouldn't be after what he went through. I thought the friendship he had with my PC was honest and believable. I suppose he might get a little too bromantic for some people, but I'm not really put off by that sort of thing.

I sure agree with you re the character.  You know, Dave G. took a lot of heat for Anomen and Carth but it seems like he and the rest of the team really listened because this time around we have a lot of great characters, humor, and the chance to talk/have some closure with your party after the big boss fight....something that a lot of us have asked about for years.  It's an amazing game. :)

I liked Anomen (and I'm guy btw) because he seemed to be very deep (cue laughing) if you put up with his boasting. I was pretty suspicious of his constant boasting so I wasn't too shocked when it became clear it was boasting to prop himself up, as he was plagued by self doubt and low self esteem.

But anyways, yes, back to Alistar. He rocks.

Anomen was one of the coolest character of BG2, I like how straightforward he is when you first meet him. BE YOU A FORCE OF GOOD OR EVIL? He's probably still at the bottom of the Spellhold maze though, since I uh... switched him out for Imoen, sadly.

I think any ending that involves a shapeshifting witch who believes 100% in doing what's needed for survival carrying around an old god is very uh... ominous. Grey Wardens are about sacrifice, people! You know this!

Do you see the man to my left? DO YOU SEE HIM? THAT WAS HIS FACE IN THE LAST FEW SECONDS OF HIS LIFE- RESOLUTE AND SMUG! GREY WARDEN WAS HE UNTIL THE END, and he didn't turn into some sort of puss when he realized what had to be done! To think that you went through all those sacrifices and options, just to back out in the ending! Shame on you! SHAME!

... I love you.

Your face I mean, I love your resolute face. *cough*

But any female character that's in love with Alistair doesn't have the chance to sacrifice themselves. I wish I could have. It would have been a fitting bit of retribution for a spoiled noble that never really did anything honorable with her life until she joined the Gray Wardens. And since Alistair was my favorite character, he seemed worth preserving, so that he could go on to be the great king I knew he could be. But unfortunately Al felt I deserved to live more than him, and ran off to sacrifice himself without giving me a chance to stop him.

So it's just that being with Alistair complicates your options. Which is what this entire thread is about you know.

Oh, I didn't know that. That is indeed pretty troublesome. Glad I played a male then, so Alistair didn't have the hots for me (even though I totally loved him in a bromance kind of way!). It is pretty nice that they managed to create a likeable character though, that you care for and so on! I must've reloaded the Landsmeet for like 3h just because I wanted Alistair and everything to be solved just right. He even made me kill Loghain which was heartbreaking for me since Loghain is easily the character I like the most after Alistair.

I don't know.... David seems to like to make you fall in love, but then put a dagger in your heart with his characters. So I'd watch your back with the virtual boyfriend.:D

Unaware of the potential repercussions, I crafted a Dalish Elf rogue who fell hard for goofy old Alistair. I made mainly "good" decisions throughout my first play-through, but I looked at the Morrigan deal in a role-playing frame of mind. My character had nothing against apostates even thought of her as a friend. I also kept Alistair his regular non-hardened, squishy self.

The ending of my game was as follows:

1: Right from the beginning I sided with Anora as Queen for selfish reasons and because I didn't think that a bloodline succession was as important as Arl Eamon seemed to think it was.

2: I killed Loghain for Alistair

3: I let Morrigan sex him up but didn't tell him that he would be an oldgod baby-daddy to save his feelings and allow Morrigan a means to an end. Who am I to say whether this old god person is good or evil?

In the final text conclusion Alistair went off to Weisshaup (sp?) with plans to visit his love in Dererim in the near future.

All in all, things worked out pretty well I think. Everyone is happy and my Dalish buddies get some land. I was so worried that Alistair would be like BG2's Anomen. I f!cking hated that guy. Suffice to say I am in complete agreement with the OP- it sure is nice to have a decent romance option for once. I just wish I could bring him along with my Blood Dragon armour to Mass Effect 2. I think he would make a great C-Sec officer.

Footnote: Maybe in DA2 we get to play AS Morrigan's kid. We start out ignorant of our origin and discover our godhood as the game progresses. All sorts of interesting moral wranglings there.

I must admit, I adored Carth Onasi.  Possibly even more than Alistair.  If anyone had an excuse to succumb to cynicism or bitterness it was him, but he never did (although he *tried* to).

Image IPB  Yeah, I loved Carth too.  And Jolee.   I think part of it was that both characters had more life experience than most NPCs which was was reflected in their comments and actions which gave them some depth.  Still, I have to admit that as relationally inexperienced as Alistair seems to be, his humor and caring more than make up for it.

I "hardened" Alastair, and I much prefer the less whiny version. However, at Landsmeet, the only option I could choose was to make Alastair king with myself ruling at his side - I really wanted to just ride off into the sunset, and spend the rest of our lives rebuilding the Wardens...Perhaps things will change after the final battle, I don't know.

But that proposal was kinda lame *sighs* I expected some passionate speech, especially before a world changing epic battle, and perhaps a little nookie in case we died. *hint for the sequel* LOL

on a side note - I LOVE that Steve Valentine is Alastair's voice :-) He was one of my fave characters in Crossing Jordan - quirky, funny, incredibly bright, with an accent that would make your heart melt. Well done Steve! :-)
