And brofists are loving, clean alternatives to nasty, icky sexual intercourse.

And appropriate for all occasions!

And here I thought we had a connection, like we were sharing something special. Major bummer.

Hey hey, we can share something special, but don't share such mental pictures 5 minutes after I had a chat with my massively gay neighbour/fellow student. :P

Hey, man, in my defense, your neighbor and I probably have extremely different views on where fists go.

As far as the reason for the post, I completely agree with you Savvy. Although I never really was into many of the romances in other RPGs, this one was pretty unavoidable. In a good way I mean. I didn't meet Alistair in Ostagar and decide I wanted to get him in my tent. But as the game progressed I developed a total crush on him.

I got my happy ever after, but even though the decision to go with the ritual didn't bother me, having to see it really made me rethink it >.< I was like UGH! Why didn't I skip that?!

Fair enough, and now that we have demonstrated sufficient homophobia, we can get on with the praises of the bromance as the maker intended. ;)

Interesting, for my character (Morrigan romance) the scene was very short and unrevealing, seems like our manipulative friends at BW decided to give female characters with an Allistair romance the extended version. :D

Oh my god, I've just experienced the same brutal romantic reality as you, Savvy30039.

I finished the game last night, and I'm not happy at all that Alistair sacrificed himself instead of me. However, up until  Morrigan's offer, my romance went smooth. I naturally chose the right option at Landsmeet, since Alistair and I already had been pronouncing our love for each other many times. I'm definitely going to replay the ending twice - the first time I will not bring Alistair on the last mission, and the second time, I will accept Morrigan's offer.

That said, I don't think I got that much invested in Alistair personally. He was the only man in the party, and I felt that he was a little too boyish. I mean, the dialogue is great and he is a belivable character, but his sweetness and softness were a little too much. But he does say all these sweet things to you that few men in the real world would do, and I guess that is what makes us feel a little special ;)

haha i too experienced the pain of reloading and loading... Before the breakup i was thinking oh god yes! I can rule as Queen of Ferelden with an iron fist and Alistair as my b****! but then boom as a Grey Warden, Elf, and a Mage he dumped me lol...Though it was endearing to hear the strain of his voice during the conversation, i almost cried during it haha. I have to say it was some really great acting.

Oh it wan't that revealing, just her climbing all over him and then blowing out the candle.  But he looked so scared! Image IPB I wanted to run into the room and change my mind.  Also when she says "you won't hate this as much as you think" in sexytime voice...  She could have waited til I was out of the room!
I still think the ending was great, just being very detailed about how it went for me lol.

They don't, 80% of the people who insist on 50% of the attention are actually straight males that want to watch homosexual females.

They certainly got their money's worth with this game... :P

I decided a couple of days ago to look for spoilers about possible happy endings with Alistair... I got so much involved in his relationship with my character that I wanted to know... Before this, when I learnt ingame that he was the son of the late king, I thought that if one day they would marry and he would access the throne, my character would become the first elven queen alongside a human kind and that would be something incredible to the elven community... and I really liked the idea of it, though the royal couple may not really be well-regarded... And their love seems so genuine that I couldn't imagine other way, or rather yes: he would just not become king as basically he didn't want to and they would just live happy and go on with adventure and rescueing the needy lol. I just can't imagine him choosing to forsake his love...

I was loving the game so far, having the relationship with Alistair giving my PC the strengh to fight all the horrors they meet on their way... Now I'm not even sure I want to go till the end...

Real life is so full of bad blows... Happy ending wouldn't hurt... Here Bioware let us meet the perfect guy (well, I know this is relative, but I know we are numerous thinking this way about him from what I read in various threads), we have basically a highly romantic relationship, we discover that even in the darkest of times there can be beautiful things... Just to rip our hearts apart in the end? How fair is this? Wish alternative endings for elves and other ladies would be released as DLC.....

If I ever try to play as a lesbian character, I hope that the relationship with Leliana can have a happy ending...

Well, it IS possible to have a happy ending with Alistair, Yorleen. You just need to make sacrifices.

Which is what the game is about, no?

See, I had the same thing - elven female PC, totally over the moon for Alistair, but I went more with the "He keeps saying he doesn't -want- to be king and honestly is kind of a doofus. Which I love but is not the most useful characteristic in a king." So I let Anora be queen. And she seemed to do just fine. Plus, there's the whole 'we have darkspawn taint' issue at hand which means kids are kind of iffy in any case, even if he did marry a regular human. So. We're going to go off and have wonderful adventures in decapitation, and Anora can worry about taxes and food riots. Suck it, Loghain-spawn! Muahahaaa.

...okay I'm going to play a human noble and be queen next time, but I digress. Nobody gets my Alistair but me, biyatches.

I enjoyed this post. Mainly because I don't like to stand back and really think things through while playing. My social impulses are usually immediate and absolute. However, after reading this post, I think I will play with a more contemplating mind in the future.

Can they really continue their life together if I decide to put Anora on the throne and if we decide to "deal" with Morrigan? If so, this is what will be chosen I think... and I'm willing to continue the story.

This option is hardly a happy ending, I would say. I can imagine the sacrifice would taint the PC and Alistair's marriage for the rest of their lives.

Yep!  But that means putting Anora on the throne... *shudder*

I read somewhere that Alistair felt betrayed if the PC chose Anora, but previously he said he didn't want to be king though... Does this depend on some dialogue options? I mean, can you choose Anora as Queen without making him unhappy? He should be glad that we can both stay "free adventurers" in a way, and not stuck on a throne?

I will see how things are going to evolve in the game... but currently, my PC isn't really what I would call friend with Morrigan but she doesn't dislike her neither. Though she can be pretty annoying she is also someone interesting + I believe her mind was shaped by what Flemeth taught her and I'm looking forward to see if some things changes after her quest (she just learnt the truth from Flemeth grimoire found in the mage tower)... Morrigan and Alistair have no attraction to each other, at least in my game, so at least this is one thing... I know that both my PC and Alistair would be haunted by this but the previous would make this a bit less aweful if I dare say... Though I may learn further thing concerning Morrigan, this I'll see... Even if it is very awkward, it would make things easier if Morrigan stays a "friend" to some extent and the fact that there is no attraction between her and Alistair...

This, oh so much this.

I too enjoyed the characters and their complexities, and although I do wish that I could have romanced some others as well, I feel that for the most part the romance bits were well done. Ignoring the creepy uncanny valley reaction I have to the dolls and all.

He didn't have much of a problem with me supporting Anora in my game, but I was upfront about it from the start and asked him what he thought. He basically said, "Well, I'm relieved, actually. Great." And that was that. I stayed on Anora's side throughout the Landsmeet, she didn't betray me, and when it rolled around to fight Loghain I had Shale do it.

(And yes, that was comical.)

Mostly because Loghain wiped the floor with me the first time around - that guy hits like a Mack truck.

Anyhoo, I was a tiny bit spoiled by the Prima guide, and I knew that if I let Loghain live Alistair would storm off. Which is actually kind of lame of him, but given that he's a sweet doofy boychild, I'm willing to forgive. He really isn't king material. I get the impulse and also find Anora annoying, but she is -much- less annoying if you support her from the start. If you're planning on running off with Alistair I recommend it, as it went pretty smoothly for me.

I may actually reload and play just the last section again, and this time not take Alistair with me to the tower and die, just to see the ending. I heard there's a eulogy that's really sweet, and that'd be nice to see. I'm not sure I want to replay 80+ hours to see it though.

(BTW: Duncan is also hot. Long live the beard.)

Thanks Jemma, then I'll do it this way, as for Anora becoming queen. As I read somewhere else, maybe there are ways to make Alistair harden but I didn't choose these options after the meeting with Goldana and so far he's still the same sweet childish joking guy... so true, as you said, not really suitable for a king but so lovely to travel with, and cheering up! :)

I never liked the idea of reloading just to try and get an ending I wanted or was more happy with. My first ending had Alistair sacrificing himself and although it left me a little bummed, I really liked it. It was pretty emotional and tied up a few loose ends.

As for Alistair and his relationship overall, I just think it's doomed. None of his endings truly feel happy. But that's Dragon Age for you.
